SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,710, dated May 21, 1889. Application filed October 26, 1888. Serial No. 289,172. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. Voss, of El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Oven-Indicator, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved oven-indicator. Fig. 2 is a rear sectional elevation taken on line 20 w in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. at is a vertical transverse section taken on line 00 x in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken 011 line y y in Fig. 1. Fig. (3 is a rear elevation of a modified form of my improved apparatus; and Fig. 7 is a horizontal sect-ion taken on line .2 .2 in Fig. 6.

The object of my invention is to provide an instrument for indicating the temperature of an oven, so that the fire may be regulated to secure the required temperature for any particular article.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the frame A is journaled the spindle B, which projects beyond the face of the frame and carries the index 0. The spindle B is provided with a weighted arm, D, which is adapted to throw the index C back to zero. To a stud, a, projecting from the front plate, I), of the frame A, is secured a curved compound bar, E, formed of strips of brass and steel fastened together in any suitable way, but preferably by brazing. The free end of the compound bar E touches the weighted 1ever D, and is adapted to move forward the said lever and index connected therewith through the spindle B whenever the curvature of the compound bar is changed by heat, the weighted lever being adapted to return the index to zero when the pressure of the compound bar is removed.
The frame A is provided with studs 0, which are inserted in the door F of the oven to which the indicator is applied, and support the said frame, so that there is a space for the circulation of the hot air of the oven between the plate Z) and the inner surface of the oven-door F. The spindle 11 extends through an opening in the door F, and upon the outer surface of the door is secured a curved scale, G, in front of which the index C moves. A sector-shaped guard, H, secured to the door F covers and protects the greater portion of the index (7. Upon the face of the guard H are the names of different articles of food, and opposite the names there are figures representing the degrees of heat required for baking or roasting such articles. The fire by which the oven is heated is regulated to bring the index C to the figure on the scale indicating the temperature required for the particular article to be roasted or baked.
In the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the spindle 13 is provided with a spur-wheel, (Z, which meshes into the wheel 6 upon the spindle W, the spindle 13 carrying the index 0, in the other case. In all other respects the construction of the indicator is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive.
The gearing serves to multiply the motion of the spindle B, thus rendering the instrument more delicate in its operation than when without gearing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an oven-indicator, the combination, with a spindle having a lever and an index or pointer, of a compound bar secured at one end and bearing at its free end against one side of said lever, and a weight for returning the lever to its normal position.
2. In an oven-indicator, the combination, with the spindle B, provided with the weighted lever D and the index 0, carried by the spindle, of the curved compound bar E, arranged to contact with the weighted lever D, substantially. as specified.
3. In an oven-indicator, the combination, with the spindle 13, provided with the weighted lever D and the index 0, carried by the said spindle, of the curved compound bar E, arranged to contact with the weighted lever D, and the scale G, substantially as specified.
