To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing atBerrett, in the county of Carroll and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivating-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved cultivating-plow, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the plow, showing the drag-bars or shovel-bars closed together. Fig. 2 is also a top view of the pl0w,but showing the drag-bars spread apart. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the plow. Fig. at is a View of one of the bearing-plates for the wheelshaft. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the central drag-bar, and shows the slidehead.
The object is to provide a plow whose cul- 2o tivating-shovels may be worked close together to cultivate in a narrow furrow or wide apart to cultivate in a broad furrow, and which shall have means for changing the adjustment of the said cultivating-shovels while the plow is in motion or being drawn along the ground.
My invention consists of the several novel parts, combinations of parts and features of construction which are hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
The frame A may be of anypreferred shape or material. The draft-clevis b is pivoted at 0, intermediate of its ends, to the frame, and the drag-bars O, or at least a part of them, 3 5 are connected to the frame by pivots d. In the present instance four drag-bars are thus pivoted. The center drag-bar, O, is rigidly attached to the frame in any suitable way. Each drag-bar is provided with a shovel, e, of ordinary construction. In the present instance the frame A consists of two pieces-an upper and a lower piece of same size and shape, and each drag-bar O has its end between the said two pieces of the frame, and
the said pivot pin d passes down through the two frame-pieces, and also through the said end of the drag-bar. Thereby the dragbar is pivoted so that the shovel end may swing or move laterally. The stationary center drag-bar, O, has a slide-head, F, which is movable thereon longitudinally or in a direction fore and aft of the plow. Link-bars G- two in number, one at each side of the center drag-bar-are each pivoted by one end to the slide-head, and also by pins h to the pivoted drag-bars O. In the present instance each link-bar G is double, or consists of two bars, one being above and the other below the drag-bars, as shown in Fig. 3, though my invention is not limited to this double eon- 6o struction. The outermost drag-bar on each side has a slot, 6, through which passes the pivot-pin h, that connects the end of the link bar G. By this construction and combination of parts the pivoted drag-bars will have their adjustment changed, so as to be either wider apart or closer together as the slidehead moves forward or backward on the center bar.
The two handles L are each pivoted to the frame A, preferably by the same pivot-pin, d, which connects the end of the innermost pivoted drag-bar O, and said handles are also pivoted by thepins h on top of the link-bars G. By this construction and combination of pivoted drag-bars and handles the latter serves as the means whereby the person holding or following the plow may change the adjustment of the drag-bars while the plow is in motion.
It is possible as will be obvious to any one examining the drawings, to dispense with the slide-head F by jointing the adjacent rear ends of the two link-bars Gr together.
Any suitable device may be employed to hold or retain the handles or drag-bars to i any adjustment at which they may be set. In the present instance this adjustment holding device consists of a rock-shaft, m, which turns or j partly turns in a bearing, n, on the frame A, and saidrockshaft has rack-teeth 0 along one edge. It also has an arm, 19, to which is attached a rod, 19, that extends up alongside of one of the handles. By pushing or pulling the rod 19 the rock-shaft in will be 5 turned in its bearing. Each handle has a plate, q, with which the rack-teeth 0 on the rock-shaft engages. It will now be seen that to change the adjustment of the drag-bars O the rock shaft must first be turned to disen- 10o gage its teeth from the two plates q on the handles, and then by moving the said handles either fartherapart or closer together the drag-bar adjustment maybe altered. Then the said holder-bar m may be turned to cause its teeth 0 to engage with the plates g.
It is quite possible to operate the parts heretofore described without reference to a wheel; but I prefer and deem it advantageous to employ a wheel, R, to carry the frame and to give the desired level position to the dragbars. I will therefore now describe the wheel and its arrangement as an element of a combination which is part of my invention.
The wheel R has a shaft, 5, whose ends have their bearings in the slots 8 of two plates, 15, each bolted to a separate bar, a, attached to the frame A. The wheel thus has position between the said two bars a. The bearingplates 25 have a horizontal slot, 8, which allows the Wheel-shaft s'to move back and for- ,ward or to oscillate in a horizontal plane. 7 A
draw-yoke, v, has two arms, which, lie horizontally and take astride of the wheel R, each arm being connected directly with an end of the wheel-shaft s. The front end of the drawyoke is jointed at 'v to the inner end of the pivoted clevis b.
It will be seen that when the outer end, 19 of the clevis is drawn to one side by the draftanimal sheering laterally the effect of the joint 0' will be to turn the forward end of the draw-yoke laterally in the opposite direction, and thereby cause the wheel R to oscillate by moving its shaft 3 in the said slots 8. Thus when the animal sheers laterally the wheel will point obliquely in the direction opposite that in which the draft-animal may be pulling, and by this means prevent the plow from deviating from a straight path.
The bearing-plates t have a number of boltholes, w, one above the other, for bolts, by which said plates are attached to the bars u. These holes allow the plates to be vertically adjusted,'so as to carry the plow-frame A higher or lower on the wheel R, and thereby have the frameand drag-bars keep a level position.
This plow may be used as a cultivator; also of suitable seed dropping or drilling mechan- I ISIII.
It is obvious that certain of the parts here shown may be used while others are omitted.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a plow, the combination of a frame,a center drag-bar rigidly attached to the frame, a drag-bar at each side pivoted to the frame, a slide-head movable on the center bar, a linkbar at each side connecting the drag-bar with the said slide-head, and two handles, each pivoted to the frame and also to the link-bars at each side.
2. In a plow, the combination of a frame, one or more drag-bars at each side of the frame and pivoted thereto, two link-bars, one at each side of the frame and each connecting the said pivoted drag-bars at its side, two handles pivoted to the frame and connected with the drag-bars and slide by means of linkbars, and an adjustment holding device to retainv the parts where they may be set, substantially as described. 3. In a plow, the combination of a frame, shaft bearing-plates vertically adjustable on the frame, a wheel Whose shaft is mounted insaid adjustable plates, one or more drag-bars at each side of the frame and pivoted thereto, two link-bars, one at each side of the frame and each connecting the said pivoted dragbars at its side, and two handles, each pivoted to the frame and also to the link-bars which connect the pivoted drag-bars with the slide on the rigid drag-bar.
' 4. In a plow, the combination of a frame, a
draft-clevis pivoted intermediate of its ends at the forward part of the frame, shaft bearing-plates having a horizontal slot, a wheel whose shaft ends occupy the said slots, and a draw-yoke whose two arms are connected with the wheel-shaft and the front end of the yoke jointed to the inner end of the pivoted clevis.
