No. 403,404. PatentedMay 14, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS IV. YATES, OF IVILMINGTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO PARKER FAUT, OF SAME PLACE.
TAl LORS SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,404, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed September 18, 1888. Serial No. 285,753- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS W. YATES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing; at Wilmington, in the county of V111 and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tailors Squares, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures of refer- IO ence thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the square, and Figs. 2 and 3 are views of curved rules for marking the lines between the outline points.
Referring to the drawings, A and A represent the square blades arranged at right angles with each other and having the diagonal brace n, connecting the extending ends of said blades, for strength and for bearing a graduated scale. The blade A is provided 011 its side having brace 71 with the extending blades a, c, and 0, supported by means of a brace, 9, connecting them with brace a for strength. The blade 0' projects at right angles with blade A. Blade a projects at an obtuse angle therewith, and blade 0 projects at an acute angle with said blade A, as shown in said figure, the angles of said blades and brace a being such as to hold the scales o thereon in the proper position for marking the proper outline points of the garment.
F is a leaf-rule hinged to the outer side of blade A, and bears a graduated scale at each end, and may have similar scales on its re- 3 5 verse side for use when folded over on leaf A. The brace n and also the blades a, c, and 0 and leaf-rule F are provided at or near their extending ends with graduated scales. All of said scales are numbered to run from twentyfour to forty-six inches, representing the extremes of bust measure. However, these scales may represent other and different numbers or other characters, if desired, and
the back of said parts may be provided with similar scales, (not necessary to be shown,) so that the scales on one side may be used to mark the outline points of the front of a garment and those on the reverse side used to mark the outline points of the back of a garment.
In use, the square is laid upon the cloth to be marked and cut, and a mark or point is made on the cloth opposite a corresponding number of each scale, the number indicating the bust-measure of the person to whom the garment is being fitted. These marks locate the angles or corners forming the outline or the garment. For the straight sides of the garment lines are run along the blades A A, and the curved rules F H are used to make the curved lines between the outline points or marks Where the lines are to be curved. Said rules also are used to mark the darts of the forms. The bust-measure having first been determined, the device, as shown, can be used to mark out front and back forms for any person having a bust-measure between twentyfour and forty-six inches.
The scales and the blades upon which they are placed can of course be made of greater 7c length, so as to mark out forms of greater size than those indicated by the scales shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
In the tailors square shown and described, the square A A, having the scale-brace n, scale-blades a, c, and o, brace g, and folding-leaf scale-rule F, all combined and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
SILAS W. YATES.
