SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,205, dated May 14, 1889. Application fled `:"ehruarj 6, 1889. Serial No. 298,798. (No model.) Patented in Germany May 8, 1888, No. 45,458.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL EWALD MLLER, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Soran, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, (for which I have obtained a patent in Germany, No. 45,453, dated May 8, 1888,) of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to new and useful improvements in car-couplings to be applied between a tender and car or between a pair of cars.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the coupling. Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the coupling. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section through the coupling-link a. Fig. 5 is a front view of a part of the coupling-shaft with the cam-collars on the same. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of said cam-collars f. Figs. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 are corresponding views of a modification-that is, Fig. 7 is a side elevation, partly in Asection, of the modification. With particular reference to Figs. 1 to 6, the letter a represents a yoke or link mounted on a shaft, b, that turns in bearings at the ends of the car. The link a has an eye at its rear end that surrounds loosely an eccentriccollar, c, keyed or welded to shaft b. The link a of each car engages the coupling-hook a of the adjoining car, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. If the shaft b is revolved so that the eccentric-collar c is turned, as shown in Fig. 4, with its largest radius forward, the front end of the link will loosely embrace the hook a and rest upon its shank; but on turning the shaft b by means of a hand-lever, d, so as to place the largest radius of the eccentriccollar c rearward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
then the yoke a will be drawn back and tightly clasp the hook a. The buffers at the same time are bearing against each other, and the two cars or trucks aresecurely coupled.
In order to raise the links a from off hooks a when the cars are uncoupled, I place two cam sheaves or collars, f, on the shaft b at both sides of the eccentric c." A cam, g, on these collars f will bear against a shoulder, mformed at the sides of yoke a., whereby the said yoke is turned up into the position shown in Fig. 3 or in dotted lines in Fig. 1. In this elevated position the yoke a may be locked by a sliding bar, Z, having about midway a cam, k, which passes below lugs o on collars f, thereby preventing the yoke from falling down.
The lever d cannot be turned to move the yoke down before the sliding bar Z and cam 7c have been drawn back to release the collars f; but when the said rod has been withdrawn the lever d and shaft b may be turned to throw the yoke a down over the opposite hook, ct, after which the lever d is turned farther on to reverse the position of the eccentric c, which tightens the grasp of the yoke on the hook, as before described. The lever d, having arrived at the end of its downward course, bears against an abutment or stop provided on the car-frame. The cams g of collars f by this time keep such position that on sliding in the bar Z with cam la the latter will again pass below the cam g of collar f and lock the shaft b and lever d. The yokes a by this means are held secured in their tight coupling position, out of which they can be released only after withdrawing the rod l, which is provided with handles at both ends.
The modification of the invention shown in Figs. 7 to 12 diers from the construction described with reference to Figs. 1 to 6 only in the omission of the lugs 0 on the collars or disks f, and further by the arrangement of a spring, h, at the end of the car behind the yoke o. On lifting the yoke by means of the lever d the yoke will bear against the spring h and bend the same. Now, on turning the handdever quickly down, the yoke a will be thrown forward over the opposite hook, a', by the force of the spring.y
