DENIS M. DENEHY AND HEMAN W. CHILDS, OF AOAMPO, CALIFORNIA.
EARTH-LEVELING SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 403,095, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed June 8,1888. Serial No. 276,541. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DENIs M. DENEHY and HEMAN W. CHILDs, citizens of the United States, residing at Acampo, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Earth-Leveling Scrapers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in scrapers which are mounted between sled-runners and used in making roads, leveling lands, excavating ditches, and generally in raising and removingloosened soil or gravel to a short distance.
It consists in the manner of hanging the iron or steel bottom between the sled-runners and controlling its position by a suitable lever connected with a platform flexibly attached to the rear of the sled and supported at its rear by a pivot-wheel; also, in such other devices as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
To more fully describe our invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of a scraper, showing our invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same through line a :0 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached view of an end of the scraper-blade and a portion of the mechanism connecting it with the sled-runners.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 7
A represents the runners of the sled. B are the front cross-bar and rear crossbar attached to the runners A. The rear cross-bar is hinged to the drivers platform 0, which is sustained at its rear by a pivot-wheel, E. The draft attachment, of any suitable kind, is attached to the front bar B. The scraper blade or shoe D may be of iron or steel or an ironshod board, and is attached between the runners A, just in front of the rear bar B, to the top of the runners by a regulating device, which consists of iron straps a, flexibly attached to the inside of and near the front ends of the runners, and, extending rearwardly, have bifurcated perforated ends which engage with F-shaped iron straps b, which are secured to the scrapers, one at each side, and are secured to the perforated bifurcated ends of the straps a by detachable pins a.
The heads of the straps I) rest upon yokes c, 6c which are secured to the runners and have their forward ends perforated, so as to change the slope of their tops.
A lever, e, for raising and lowering the blade D forms an angle at its lower end,
and at the angle engages with a post, 9, attached to the rear barB andforming the fulcrum of the lever, which at its lower end is flexibly attached to the forked iron rods, which are flexibly attached to the bladeD. A hook- 7o shaped iron post, h, is attached near the rear of the platform 0 and receives the end of the lever e when the blade D is permanently elevatedfor purpose of transportation.
The advantages of our invention are these: By placing the scraper-blade D between the sled-runners A we are enabled to move a body of dirt without its escaping from the sides of the scraper, as such dirt is held in place by the runners until ready for discharging, which is accomplished by depressing the lever e, which elevates the blade D, so that it discharges its load of earth and passes over it. The pitch or slope desired to be given the blade D, it is easily to be seen, is accomplished by means of the adjustable attachment of the blade to the sides of the runners and by the means of the adjusting side yokes, c. The hinged plat-form C also permits of that portion of the machine adapting itself to uneven 9o lands without in any way obstructing the movements of the blade.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. The combination, substantially as de- 9 5 scribed, of the sled-frame with a suitable draft attachment, the scraper D, the iron straps a, with bifurcated perforated upper ends, the |"-shaped straps b, the detachable pins 0/, the adjustable yokes c, the platform 0, hinged to the rear of the rear bar B and provided with the supporting-wheel E, and a suitable lever for raising and lowering the blade D.
2. The combination, substantially as debetween the sled-runners A an d provided with the controlling-lever mechanism, composed of the forked iron rod (Z, the lever e, and the ful- I 5 crum-post g.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
DENIS M. DENEl-IY. llEMAN NV. CHILDS.
