SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,020, dated May '7, 1889. Application filed December 19, 1888. Serial No. 294,042. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY WVILHZELM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oneida Mills, in the county of Carroll and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beaters and Scouring-Oases for Grain-Scouring Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in heaters and scouring-cases to be used on machines for scouring wheat and other grains.

The object is to produce heaters and scouring-cases of such construction that they will be prevented from working smooth, but will at all times present a roughened surface, which is highly essential to good scouring.

With these objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of heaters and scouringcases, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed outin the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated one form of scouring device fitted up with my peculiar scouringcase and heaters, although the same may be applied to other styles of machines without departing from the spirit thereof, and'in these drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a scouringmachine, part of the casing and scouring-case being broken away to show the heaters in place therein; and Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the heaters.

Heretofore it has been customary to construct heaters and scouring-cases of a grainscouring machine of iron or steel. WVhile these answer the purpose very well for a certain length of time the surfaces of these heaters and scouring-cases become worn smooth, and thus fail to scour the wheat thoroughly.

It is the object of this invention to construct the. above-named parts of a material which will always present a roughened surface so long as used, and which can neverbecome smooth by use.- In order to produce this result, I make the heaters and scourin cases out of a composition consisting of firebrick clay and sand, and mold, stamp, or press 5 5 it into the desired shape, and then bake it to as great a degree of hardness as possible. Now, it will be seen that as the device is used the fire-clay, being softer than the sand, will wear away, and thus allow the sand to proj ect beyond the surface of the fire-clay, and thus present a surface which will rapidly and efficiently scour any kind of grain.

Referring to the drawings, I have shown one form of a scourer, the casing of which is designated by the letter A. This scourer may be of any desired size and shape, and is provided at its ends with suitable bearing, in which moves a shaft, 1, carrying the arms 2, to which the heaters are secured.

E designates the scouring-case, also constructed of the composition above referred to, and is provided at its upper side with apipe, 3, in which the grain is fed to the casing, and at its lower side with a discharge-pipe, 4, from which it escapes. The end of the shaft is provided with a pulley, 5, around which passes abelt to a suitable driving mechanism for operating this device.

It will thus be seen that by using the composition above referred to for constructing the heaters and scouring-cases in a grainscourer all the obstacles heretofore presented by the surface of the heaters and scouringcases becoming smooth will be obviated; that an old machine may be taken and by simply attaching my improved heaters and scouring-case a machine as good as new will be produced, and that the improvements herein mentioned will lower the cost of the production of scouring-machines.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture, a heater and scouring-case for grain-scourers, composed of a composition of baked fire-clay and sand, substantially as'described.
