SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,959, dated May 7, 1889.

Be it known that I, JOHN W. MILLET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dolgeville, in the county of Herkimer Vand State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lasting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in lasting-machines, and by means of this improvement the upper can be rapidly and accurately secured to the insole, as set forth in the following` specilication and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a lasting-machine, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. l, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of a last and friction-piece on a larger scale than Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are views similar to Fig. 4, with parts in a different position than in Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a sec-- tion along the line ai a, Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a detail view of cams.

In the drawings, the letter a indicates a base or support, and b is the main shaft, having a worm-wheel, c, Fig. l, gearing into a suitable worm on the driving-shaft CZ, having the pulleys e c. One of the pulleys e is fast and the other loose, so that by suitably shifting a driving-belt (not shown) the shafts CZ b can be rotated Ior allowed to come to rest. The shaft b carries a cam, A, abutting against a roller, B, on the connecting-rod C. As the rod C is oscillated by the cam A, said rod oscillates the arm f and the arm or lever g h, connected to the arm f. The branch h of the lever g h presses upon the last Za, and the oscillations of the lever g h permit the last to be alternately raised and lowered. The branch g has a screw, i, by which the position of the lever g h relative to the last Zr can be regulated.
The last rests on a spindle, F, and said spindle is yieldingly supported by the spring Z, located in the housing K. Said spring allows the lever g 7L to depress the last, and when the pressure of the lever g 7L is removed the spring Z moves the last back to its original position. The spindle F carries a sleeve, L,which can be clamped or adjusted by the screw c at any suitable point along the spindle. The sleeve L has an arm, V, carrying a toe-support, N, for supporting the toe of the last. By setting the sleeve L higher or lower the toe of the last will be adjusted higher or lower, as may be suitable. Further adjustment of the arm V can be secured by the screw y engaging the branch w of the arm V, the actuation of the screw y being adapted to adjust the arm V about the pivot a, supported by the sleeve L.
The main shaft b carries a cam, which cam in the drawings consists of two corresponding parts, D D2, Fig. l. The movements of the cam D Dgoscillates the sliding flange E.

As the fiange E rises and falls it oscillates the levers or arms o about the fulora q. The arms o have set-screws 19, against which the flange E and filling-piece S strike. The arms 0 are connected to the branches or arms r, and as the flange E and llling-piece S rise the free ends of the arms fr are pressed toward the last. The
arms r, when made of spring metal, can be.
pressed toward the last without danger of breakage.
The spring-arms r carry friction-pieces s, provided with a shoe or jointed arm, u, and with a prong or prongs, t. The last is provided with an insole, m, Fig. 4, suitably tacked or secured to the last, and with an upper, n. lAs the last descends and the spring-arms r arepressed toward the last the shoe a gradually presses the upper against the insole, Figs. 5 and 6, and the prongs .hold the upper in engagement with the insole. The insole and upper can then be secured to one anotherby suitable means, such as tacking, or by allowing a suitable adhesive or cement with which the insole or upper has been supplied to be- 9 come set, so as to secure adherence of the npper to the insole. The friction-pieces s can be adj usted or clamped at a suitable point along the arms rv by the adj Listing or clamping screws O.
The pivots or fulcra q of the arms r are mounted in bearings or lugs R, Fig. l, supported on a plate, M, supported on the plate II. Said plate II is shown as restingV on the housing K. The plate M is shown as being in sections. (Marked l l 3 4c 5.) Section l is fixed to the plate II. Section 5 is held in place by an adjusting screw or bolt, I, passing through a slot, J, in section 5. The sections 2 3 4 are removable, and by removing one or more of the removable sect-ions and setting the section 5 nearer' to section l. the device is adjusted for a shorter last. As the section 5 is set nearer to the section l, the lilling-piece S is correspondingly adj usted by fixing the screw T at a proper point along the slot G.
The action of the cams A D D2 is illustrated in Fig. S. Then the point 3, Fig. 8, of the cams is in action, then the parts occupy the position shown in Fig. 5, and when the point at, Fig. S, is in action, then the parts 0ccupy the position shown in Fig. G.
IVliat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a lasting-1nachine, the combination of a support carrying a last, a series of swinging levers having friction-shoes to press the npper inward upon the insole, arms o, for swinging the levers, and a reciprocating flange, E, for actuating said arms, substantially as described.
2. In a lasting-machine, the combination, with a last-support, ot' a series ot' swinging levers, r, carrying friction-shoes, arms 0, for swinging the levers, a movable flange, E, for actuating the arms, and a rotary cam 'for operating the lflange, substantially as described.
In a lasting-machine, the combination, With a last and mechanism i'or lasting the npper, of a yielding last-supporting spindle, F, and a sleeve, L, secured directly to the spindle and adjustable along the same, and having a last toe-support pivoted to said sleeve, substantially as described.
4. In a lasting-machine, the combination, with a last and mechanism for lasting the upper, of a yielding last-supporting spindle, F, and a sleeve, L, secured directly to the spindle and adjustable along the same, and having a pivoted arm, V, provided With a last toe-support, N, substantially as described.
5. In a lasting-machine, the combination, with a last and levers having friction-pieces, of an under plate, II, and a supporting-plate, M, for the levers, arranged on the under plate and composed of an adjust-able section and a removable and replaceable section or sections, substantially as described.'
6. In a lasting-machine, the combination, with a vertically-movable last, of a reciprocating arm, f, provided with anv adjustable lever, g 71, for holding down said last, and a con.- necting-rod, C, and actuating-cam A, connected to Asaid arm j', substantially as described.
