UNITED STATES ANDREW P. KNUDSEN, OF SYCAMORE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PATENT OFFICE.
MALTBIE HOYT, OSCAR RUSSELL, AND HENRY H. HOYT, OF SAME PLACE.
DIE FOR BRICK OR TILE MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,940, dated May 7, 1889. Application filed May 7, 1888. Serial No. 273,052. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW P. KNUDSEN,
a subject of the King of Denmark, and a resident of Sycamore, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Brick or Tile Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to tile-machines; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents an end view of the machine with die in place. Fig. 2 represents -a vertical sectional view on the line 00 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the die, the casing being partly broken away to show the interior.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A dessignates the casing or water-j acket, which may be of any material that will withstand the action of water, such as terra-cotta. The ends of the casing are provided with one or more lugs or ears, by means of which it may be attached to the discharge-spout of a pugmill.
B is the die that is inserted in the casing and which tapers from one end to the other to fit therein. The said die is provided in all sides with the slots 1), that extend for nearly half the length of the die 011 each side of its center, and has in the inner surfaces of its sides the parallel oblique grooves 12', that connect laterallyadjacent slots, the series of grooves b inclining alternately in opposite directions. The said grooves are converted into channels by the cloth lining 19 which permits the Water to permeate it and moisten the clay.
By the combination of the long slits and oblique grooves or channels b the water is more equally distributed than with non-extended openings, as the slots take water for their entire length, which is nearly the length of the die. The grooves take water from the entire length of the slots, and the oblique arrangement of the grooves gives a much larger water-surface at the interior of the die than if they crossed at right-angles thereto, as is apparent. I
D is a chamber in the casing above the die, having openings in its floor above the slots 12 and communicating therewith, and c c are openings in the roof of the chamber vertically above the openings d.
O O are plug-valves entering the openings 0 and with their ends resting upon the corresponding openings d. By raising and lowering said valves the water can be let on or turned 0E from the slots b.
E is a stand-pipe rising from the chamber D, and F is a Water-tank on top of said standpipe, for the purpose of delivering water thereto and to the chamber D.
Theoperation of the machine is apparent from the foregoing description.
Having described my invention, I claim- The combination, with the casing having the chamber D, provided with the openings 01 in its floor and the openings 0, vertically above the corresponding openings d, in its roof, the plugvalves O, the stand-pipe E, rising from the chamber D, and the tank on top of the stand-pipe, of the die provided with the longitudinal slots 6 in its sides and the series of oblique grooves 1), connecting said slots, and the cloth lining of the die converting said grooves into channels, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the, foregoing as my own I have hereunto affiXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREWV P. KN UDSEN.
