UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LODOXVICK XV. GAY, OF VORDNER, IDAIIO TERRITORY.
TRIGGER-SETTING MECHANISM FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,918, dated May '7, 1889.
' Application filed January 17, 1889. Serial No. 296,579. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LODOVVICK W. GAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVordner, in the county of Shoshone and Territory of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Arms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing, in which is represented a side elevation of my improvement applied to an ordinary breechloading gun.
My invention relates particularly to breechloading fire-arms, and it has particular reference to that class of guns in which the loading and cocking operation is accomplished by means of a pivoted trigger guard or lever, as is well known in the art.
The object of the invention is to provide novel and simple means for positively resetting the trigger by the same movement that reloads and cocks the gun, as will be fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A designates the stock of an ordinarybreech-loading gun; B, the hammer thereof; 0, the trigger, and E the pivoted resetting lever or guard. These parts may all be constructed in the usual well known manner, with the exception of the pivoted lever E. This guard is provided with a forwardly-extending thumb or arm, a, which, when the guard is in its normal position, is immediately behind the trigger, as shown in full lines in the drawing. In the end of this projection is journaled an anti-friction roller, 19.
It will be observed that when the lever E is thrown down and forward to cook the gun and reload it, as shown in the drawing by dotted lines, the shoulder a will press the trigger Gforward and reset it simultaneously with the reloading process. By this means the trigger is positively set every time the lever is operated to cock and reload the gun, thereby doing away with the internal uncertain and complicated mechanism for that purpose heretofore employed.
1 claim- In afire-arm, the combination, with a gun provided with a hammer and trigger, of a pivoted lever, E, provided with an integral forwardlyprojecting arm, a, and a rollerjournaled upon the forward end of the said arm and resting immediately behind the curved back of the trigger, whereby, when the said pivoted lever is thrown down, the said roller will impinge against the curved back of the trigger and press the same forward, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
LODOVVIOK \V. GAY.
