N (No Model.)
H. (J. BENNETT. END GATE.
Patented May 7, 1889..
I WIfJV'ESSESI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOLLAND O. BENNETT, OF RAYMOND, ILLINOIS.
END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,891, dated May '7, 1889. Application filed November 217, 1888. Serial No. 291,947. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLLAND O. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Raymond, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wagonbody provided with my improved end-gate, showing said gate closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the gate open. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the segmental side pieces, and Fig. at is a cross-sectional view.
Like letters of reference denote correspond ing parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to end-gates for wagons, carts, and other vehicles; and it consists, essentially, in providing a gate of such construction as to permit of its being readily opened and closed, and also when closed to lock automatically; and with these ends in view it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A represents the wagon-body, and B the end-gate thereof, said gate consisting of the end piece, 0, and the segmental side pieces, D D. These side pieces are provided with curved slots E E, said slots terminating in their rear eudsin enlargements e e.
Extending laterally from the wagon-body, and passing through these slots, are screws or equivalents F F, adapted to retain the segmental side pieces in proper position, and to permit of the gate being readily closed and opened.
The lower rear portion of the side pieces are provided with shoulders or cut-away portions G G, which are adapted to bear upon the rear axle, H, of the vehicle, or, if preferred, upon an under cross-piece provided for the purpose in order to support the gate when the same is in a closed position.
It will be seen from the construction above described that this gate is capable of being closed or opened with but the slightest difficulty, this being facilitated by the peculiar construction of the slots of the side pieces forming approximately arcs of circles. The gate also looks automatically, inasmuch as when the same is raised for the purpose of closing the moment the enlarged rear ends of the curved slots reach the laterally-extending bolts the gate by its own gravity will fall, and thus be securely retained in place. When it is desired to open the gate, all that is necessary is simply to lift the same slightly until the enlarged ends of the slots are out of engagement with the bolts.
It will also be observed that when the gate is closed the shoulders or cut-away portions of the side pieces will be firmly seated upon the axle of the vehicle, and the downwardlyextending portion of said shoulders, bearing against the inner side of the axle, will prevent the gate from working out of place. Furthermore, my improved gate is simple and inexpensive in construction, and little liable to become damaged.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with a wagon having the retaining-screws F in its sides, of the described end-gate cut away on each side at G to rest upon some supporting portion of the wagon-such as the axle or a transverse bar and provided in its sides with suitably-curved slots E, each slot having both ends enlarged, as at c, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
HOLLAND c. BENNETT.
' Witnesses:
P. A. HOFFMAN, I HARRISON SHARP.
