SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,675, dated May '7, 1889.
Application filed February 15, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section cutting through the center of the frame, showing the hammer in side elevation and the position of the other parts when the breech is opened. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, a portion of the frame being broken away, showing the bellcrank lever in elevation, the barrel-lug being also broken away, showing the cavity or recess formed in the side wall of the central slot of the frame, the other parts being shown in dotted lines in the positions occupied when the breech is closed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the dotted line A in Fig. 1. A side elevation of the bell-crank lever is shown in Fig. 5. A plan view of the same is shown in Fig. 4.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of breech-loadin g fire-arms which are commonly known as tiltingbarrel or breakdown arms, and is more closely allied to that class known as hammerless or concealed-hammer guns. In this class of guns two barrels are usually employed.
The object of this invention is to further improve and perfect the means shown in patents granted to me bearing dates, respectively, January 18, 1887, No. 356,321, and August 16, 1887, No. 368,401.
The improvement under consideration consists in providing a check or stop to limit the upward movement of the barrel when tilted for cocking or loading, thereby relieving the smaller and weaker parts, which are less calculated to withstand the severe strains to which they would be subjected in the event of the sudden or forcible throwing open of the breech, which would otherwise be accompanied by breaks or other disastrous results.

In Figs. 1 and 2 the mechanism is substantially the same as that shown in the patents hereinbefore referred to, and constitutes no part of this present invention further than to say that I simply provide the forwardly-projecting arm of the bell-crank lever with laterally-projecting ears or lugs, which extend within cavities or recesses formed in the side walls of the barrel-lug slot or central slot of the frame, and which, when the barrels are tilted, (as from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1,) contact with the upper walls of said cavities or recesses, thereby forming a check or stop for the barrels and at the same time relieving all the other parts from further and unnecessary strain.
InFig. 1, B is the barrel, and O the frame, of ordinary pattern, and D the pivot or pintle which passes through the forward part of the frame and upon which the barrel is hung, and F is the barrel-lug, all of which hold the usual relation to each other, and operate in a manner too well understood to require further description. The central or barrel-lug slot is represented by the letter 0, and d is the depression, cavity, or recess formed therein. A hell-crank lever, e, is hung in the central slot of the frame 0 upon a pivot, as at f, its forwardly-proj ectin g arm 9 being provided with laterally-projecting lugs or ears h. A link or hook, 2, is pivoted to the barrel-lug at 3, its opposite end in connection with the forward end of the bell-crank lever e, as at 5, and the other and downwardly-projecting arm, 4, of the bell-crank lever being in connection with the rearwardly-projecting slide J by projecting into a slot or mortise formed in said slide, as at k. The rear end of the slide J terminates in upwardly-proj ecting points or lugs P, which engage with the cam projections 8 upon the hammer E, which is pivoted within the frame at or. y r The usual sear is employed for engaging with and retaining the hammer in a cocked position, and the ordinary trigger for releasing the sear, the operation of these old and much-used parts being so well known that a repetition of their action is deemed unnecessary, and for this reason they are also omitted in the drawings.
The operation of the several parts being precisely the same as described in my previous patents hereinbefore referred to, with the exception of the addition of the check or stop, and that having been fully set forth in the foregoing specification, arepetition of the same is also deemed unnecessary.
It is evident that the device herein described is equally as applicable to single-barrel arms, and I therefore would not be understood as confining myself to those having two barrels.

In a breech-loading self-cocking gun, the
7 combination, with a tilting barrel, of a hammer pivoted within the frame in the rear of the barrel, a longitudinal slide arranged in the frame below the pivot of the hammer, a projection on the said slide, adapted to engage a corresponding point upon the hammer below the pivot upon which the hammer is hung, the said slide extending forward beneath the barrel, with a bell-crank lever hung in the frame in the rear of the pivot upon which the barrel is hung, one arm of said lever in connection with said slide, the other arm being provided near its extreme end with projecting ears or lugs extending into recesses formed in the side walls of the central slot of the frame in which said lever is hung and adapted to contact with the upper walls of said recesses in its upward movement, and a link or hook connecting said lever and the barrel, all arranged to operate substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
