JAMES A. SEYMOUR AND JOHN E. MCINTOSH, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
STEAM-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,622, dated May I7, 1889.
Application iilecl July 23,1888. Serial No. 280,759. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
1 Beit known that We, JAMESA. SEYMOUR d J oHN E. MolN'rosH, of the city oflAuburn,
ew York, have invented certain new and eful Improvements in Steam-Engines, of vhch the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawtjigs, forming part of this specification.
` 'lhc figure shown is an elevation.
j This invention consists in certain new conj'structions, arrangements, and combinations -.of the several parts of a compound steamengine, whereby it is simplified, the action of the yalve-operating mechanism is made di- 4frect, the operative parts are brought compactly together, and the efliciency of the enfine is increased, while its cost is lessened by -he resulting simplicity of construction.
n Our invention relates to that class of conipound engines which is commonly designated as tandem engines-that is, engines in wlli 5h the high and low pressure cylinders are placed with their axes in line, so that both of their pistons may be secured upon and may actuate one piston-rod, the steam. acting simultaneously and in the/same direct-ion. :upon both pistons. In such an engine we arrange the steam-chests of the high and low pressure cylinders upon opposite sides of their respective cylinders, and by this arrangement we are able to extend their respective valve-rods upon opposite sides of their common pistonrod toward a double-crank shaft placlld in the same plane, but at right angles with the piston-rod. This double-crank shaft is then provided upon either side of the crank with an eccentric, and eccentric-rods being connected thereupon are attached at their other extremities to the aforesaid valve-rods, which vare supported. by suitable guides. By this construction it will be seen that a tandem single piston-rod compound engine has its valve-rods connected through their eccentricrods to two eccentrics placed upon opposite sides of the crank-shaft, which is in the plane of and at right angles to the piston-rod or axial line of the two cylinders. '.lhe valveactuating parts are made in the most simple manner and of the inost direct action, while the construction of the whole engine is made very simple and of consequent cheapness.
In the drawing, A is the high-pressure cylinder; A its steam-chest; a, its valve-rod; a', valve-rod guide; a2, its eccentric-rod operated by the eccentric a.
B is the low-pressure cylinder; B', its steamchest; b, its valve-rod; b', its guide; b2, its eecentric-rod operated by the eccentric Ui.
The eccentrics a and b" are both placed upon the double-crank shaft C .D C.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and d csire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a compound engine, the cylindersA and l, arranged in line axially and having their respective steam-chests A and B upon opposite sides thereof, in combination with the doublecrank shaft (i D C, which is provided with two eccentrics, a and D, upon either side of vthe crank, respectively, said crank-shaft being in the plane of and at right angles to the axes of the cylinders A. and l, and the valverods a and l), connected, respectively, to the eccentrics ai and lf through. the eccentricrods a2 and ZF, substantially as described.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 402,622, granted May 7, 1889, upon the application of James A. Seymour and John E. McIntosh, of Auburn, New York, for an improvement in Steam Engines, an error appears in the printed specification requiring 'correction as follows: In line 9 the description of the drawing should read, The ]gur shown is aplcm view, instead of The figure shown is an elevation, and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein to make the same conform to the record of the ease in the Patent Office.
Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 14th day of May, A. D. 1889.
