Be it known that I, HENRY W. SMITH, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in lVatchmens Time-Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This is a device in which a watchman deposits a card at each visitation in one of a series of pockets in a revolving drum in a closed case, each of which pockets passes a slot for the passage of the card at a given time, which time is indicated by a number marked upon the drum by the pocket. The construction is such that the cover can only be opened at a certain period in each day, or other period of time, so that the watchman cannot have access to the interior during watch-hours.

2 is a cover hinged to the box at 3, and locked at the other edge by a spring-catch, i, of which 5 is the spring, the spring forcing the catch outward, so that its tooth G engages in a recess, 7, of the cover and holds it down. At 8 is a pin-hole passing through the wall of the box, through which a pin may be pushed to force back the spring-catch in a certain position of the drum 9 so as to allow the cover to be raised. The drum is turned on its axis at 10 by clockwork, or other means which will give itregular motion, and preferably has hour-hand 11 and minute-hand 12, the hour-hand being fixed to the drum, and the minute-hand having of course proportional'rate of revolution. The drum is arranged to turn once in twenty-four hours, and the dial-plate may be marked, as shown, with two series of figures, each from 1 to 12, inclusive, (making twenty-four in all,) or may be marked from 1 to 24, (inclusive,) if preferred.

The drum has an annular series of pockets, 13. As shown, there is a pocket for each ten minutes in time-=one hundred and forty-four in all. The numbers, which are shown at 14, indicate at what time each pocket comes in line with. the slot 15, so that when. a card, check, or token, 16, is passed through the slot the numbers shown at 1a indicate the exact time of deposit. A

17 is a glass face, which is fixed in the cover, and carries the dial-numbers 18. This, however, is notessential, as the cover may be made to close the pockets without the presence of the glass. In this case the numbers 18 may be marked upon the cover itself.

A. part of the circumference of the drum is cut away at 19 to allow the catch i to be moved inward to release the cover, as seen in broken lines in Fig. II. The upper edge, 20, of the drum prevents the retraction of the catch at all times, except when the part of the drum having the recess presented to it, a horn, 21, of the catch coming in contact with the part 20 on any attempt to force in the catch, except at such time as the horn can enter the recess.

I have described and shown the dial as marked for twenty-four hours and the drumpockets 1 3 as arranged accordingly; but I do not confine myself to this, as the dial might be marked for twelve or any other number of hours, and the pockets 13 arranged in accordance with the marking of the dial. The pockets are shown arranged for ten-minute spaces of time, but maybe arranged for shorter or longer periods.

I claim as my invention- 1. The revolving drum 9, with pockets 13 and. recess 19, inclosing case 1, having pinhole S, l0ck-eover 2, with slot 15, and springcatch at, all constructed and combined sub stautially as set forth.

2. The combination, in a watchmaus timeregister, of the case 1, with pin-hole 8, revolving drum 9, with numbered pockets 13, and recess 18, spring-catch i, hands 11. and 12, and. dial-plate 17, fixed to the cover, substantially as set forth.
