To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, GEORGE REHEUss,
JOHN GEORGE REHEUss, and MARTIN O. REH- bail and said bail is acted upon by a cam-lever for the purpose of eifecting the stoppering of the bottle, the object of our invention being to simplify and cheapen the construction of the I operating devices for the stopper. This object we attain in the manner hereinafter set forth,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a bottle provided with a stopper and operating devices therefor,

The upper-disk, b, of the stopper hasa projecting stud, f, to which is secured the upper or transverse bar of the bail B, the opposite legs of the latter being bent inward at their lower ends, and these ends being adapted to eyes g, formed upon the opposite side bars, 71, of the operating-lever D. The upper ends of these arms h are connected together by a yoke,
i, passing around one side of the neck of the bottle, and their lower ends are connected by a yoke, m, passing around the other side of said neck, and, by preference, provided with aproject-ing loop, at, whereby'the manipulation of the lever is facilitated. When the yoke m of the lever D is depressed, the upper ends of the side bars, h, of the lever are caused to V bear against the shouldera of the bottle-neck, and the eyes 9 are forced downward, carrying with them the side legs of the bail B, and thus forcing the stopper firmly into the mouth of the bottle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, undue movement of the operating-lever being prevented by contact of the yokes o' and m with the sides of the bottle-neck. On elevating the yoke m of the operating-lever the upper ends of the side bars, h, of said lever are moved from under the shoulders a, and the eyes g are at liberty to rise with the bail B until the stopper is free from the mouth of the bottle,
as shown in Fig. 2, said stopper being then at liberty to move outward and downward to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that the mouth of the bottle is completely unobstructed.
It will be observed that in our improved stopper the usual neck wire or band extending around the bottle below the mouth is dispensed with; hence the cost of the stopper is reduced, and it can be fitted to the bottleneck more readily than if the neck wire or band were employed.
The operating-lever D (shown in Figs. 1 to 5) is made of a single piece of wire bent to the proper shape, the ends of the wire forming a butt-joint at the center of the yoke 1'. The ends of the wire may, however, form a lock- 5 joint, if desiredas shown in Fig. 6, for instance-and a button, n, may in some instances replace the loop 11, as shown in Fig. 7. Although the form of stopper shown is preferred, it will be evident that our improved 10o operating devices may be used in connection with cap-stoppers of any of the usual forms.
We are aware that in the patent of Prescott, No. 201,891, April 2, 1878, there is shown a stopper having a bail to the lower ends of which is hung a tightening-lever, said lower ends of the bail being guided in vertical grooves in a band around the neck of the bottle and the opposite arms of the tighteninglever acting on horizontal ribs or flanges projecting laterally from said band above the grooves, and we are also aware that in the specification of said patent it is suggested that the vertical grooves can be formed directly in and the lateral projections directly on the bottle; but such special construction of the bottle is rendered unnecessary in our case, and the operating mechanism for the stopper is much more compact than that shown in the Prescott patent, for the opposite arms of the tightening-lever are not, as in said patented stopper, set 01f from the neck by reason of the vertical guides for the lower ends of the bail, but lie close to the sides of the neck and engage with the shoulder formed by the usual head of the bottle, instead of with special projecting flanges, such as proposed by Prescott.
lVe therefore claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the bottle with the stopper, the bail, and a tighteningdever hung to the bail and movable Vertically on the bot-v tle, the side bars of said lever occupying a position close to the sides of the neck and engaging with the shoulder formed by the head of the bottle, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the shouldered bottle, the stopper, and the stopper-carrying bail, with the operating-lever hung to said bail and having opposite side bars for engaging with the shoulder of the bottle, and opposite yokes connecting the upper and lower ends of said side bars, substantially as specified.
