DENTAL PLUGGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,294, dated April 30, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK L. BARNEY, of Prairie du Chien, in the county of Crawford and State of Wisconsin, and HILBERT E. TAY- LOR, of Bloomington, in the county of Grant, and in the State of Wisconsin,have invented certain newv and useful lImprovements in Dental Pluggers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to dental pluggers; and it consists incertain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to behereinafter described with reference to the ac. companying drawings, and. subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure -1 represents a lon-l gitudinal section of a ldental plugger constructed according to `our invention; Fig. 2, a section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1;' Fig. 3, a section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l; Figs.4 and 5, detail views of the mallet and shell that form parts of our device; Fig. 6, a partial section view showing another form of instrument employed in connection with our device and the means for actuating said instrument; Fig. 7, an end view of the same;
Fig. 8, an end View of the plungerbore shown in Fig. l; and Figs. 9 and 10, detail sections showing another means for changing the angle of the instrument.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A reppresents the outer shell or casing of our denv talplugger, and screw-threaded to one end of this shell is an ordinary slip-coupling, B, for attaching the plugger to a dental. engine. Screw-threaded to thel other end of the shell A is a tip, C, that serves as a bore for a plunger, D, that in one of its forms is provided with a circular head, E, for the strokes `of a mallet, to be hereinafterV described.
The free end of the tip C is provided with a series of longitudinal notches, @diametrically opposed in pairs, and designed for the reception of the ends of a pin, o, that passes transversely thro ugh the plungerD orinstead of this pin said plunger maybe provided with lugs arranged to serve the same purpose. The bore o f the tip is enlarged at its inner end to receive head E of plunger D, and aspiral spring, F, that surrounds said plunger between its head and a shoulder, d, the latter being formed by said enlargement of the tipbor'e. By drawing the plunger out against the tension of spring F the pin or lug c can be 5 5 shifted from one to another pair of the notches b, to thereby change the angle of a pluggingtool, G, connected to said plunger, and said notches also permit the reciprocation of the plunger within the tip, the construction thus 6o `far described being best illustrated in Figs.
l and 8.
vIn Fig. 6 we show another form of tip and plunger designed for work on the back side of teeth. The latter form of plunger is reduced for a certain distance from its upper end to receive the spring F, the latter being arranged to exert its force against a sleeve, H, that is slipped onto the inner end of said plunger. The sleeve H is provided with the 7o notches h for the pin or lugs c belonging to the plunger, and said sleeeve is also 'provided with an arm, H', to which is 'hinged a plate, I, that is in turn pivoted to the tip C by means of a pin7 cZ, as illustrated in Figs. 6 7 5 and 7.
In the latter form of tip and plunger the angle of the plugging-tool Gis changed by pushing in on said tool against the spring F, thereby disengaging the pin or lugs c from 8c one pair of notches and permitting the turning of said tool to bring said pin or lugs into engagement with another pair of said notches.
The plugging-tool attached to the latter form of plunger is held against the baclr side of a tooth, and by pulling against said tool the plate I is tilted to receive the blow of the mallet.
By Figs. 9 and lO we show still another form of tip and plunger, the same being inf 9o tended for use instead of similar parts shown in Fig. l. In the latter form of tip and plunger the latter is formed with a collar, J, arranged adjacent to the head E, this collar being provided with the notches `b and the pin orlug clarranged to project inward from said tip to engage any one of said notches, accord ing to the angle it maybe desirable to set the plugging-tool. To set the plugging-tool, the
plunger is drawn down against the spring F roo to bring the'collarout of engagement with the pin or lug c, the tool turned to the requisite angle, and the plunger released. The spring F forces the plunger back to its normal position to bring another notch into engagement with the'pin or lug on the tip.
The mallet K in our device is splice joined to a shell, L, that is provided with a step, M, for the jointed shaft N, designed for connection with the dental engine, said shaft being provided with a cam, O, that operates in conjunction with another cam or pin, P, on one of the mallet-splices. A spring, Q, rests on the inner end of the shell L and operates to keep the running-cam O clear of the mallet cam or pin P, this being the normal position of the parts.
The mallet K is provided with a recess, f, for engagement with the inner arm of a bellcrank lever, R, that is fulcrumed to the sides of a box, g, that projects from the shell A, the latter being slotted at h to permit said arm of the bell-crank lever to enter the recess in said mallet. The bell-crank lever R is Worked by the thumb of the operator to raise the shell L againstthe force of: a spring,S,that is supported on a washer, T, arranged between the opposing ends of the splices belonging to said shell and the mallet, therebybringing the runningcam 0 more or less into contact with the cam P, whereby the lift of said mallet is controlled in proportion to the depression of said bellcrank lever.
The mallet K and shell L are held against rotation by means of a lug, f1', that projects inwardly from the shell A to engage a slot, j, in said shell, and when the mallet is lifted by the action of the cams O P the spring S forces said niallet back the moment said cams pass out of contact, thereby causing an impact against the head E of the plunger.
A slide, U, is arranged in the box g on the casing A and carries a pin, 7c, upon its inner end. W'hen the slide U is moved in, the pin k thereon comes into position to form a rest for the outer arm of the bell-crank lever R, whereby the lift of the latter is limited, and in consequence thereof the mallet has only a slight blow on the plunger-head, because the contact of the cams O P is correspondingly limited.
To prevent the shell L from leaving the cam-shaft N when driven back by the spring Q, after being raised by the bell-crank lever R, a screw or pin, V, is passed through one of the splices of said shell to rest upon said cam O, as best illustrated by Fig. 2.
By means of the bell-crank lever R the mallet may be started, stopped, or controlled by a slight pressure of the operators thumb, and the pressure of the mallet-spring being less than is usually the case in dental pluggers of the ordinary construction the parts composing said plugger can be more readily taken apart and put togather, and any undue pressure on the connection for the dental engine is not liable to damage the device, from the fact that the jointed cam-shaft N yields to said pressure. In some instances the bellcrank lever R may be omitted and the cams O P arranged to come in and out of contact with each other at each revolution of the camshaft.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. ln a dental plugger, the combination of a spring-controlled tool-plunger, a mallet for the plunger, a shell loosely spliced to the mallet, a spring arranged to exert its pressure against said mallet, another spring arranged to exert its pressure against the shell, a cam or pin arranged onone of the malletsplices,
a jointed drive-shaft stepped in said shell and moved back and forth by the latter, and a cam carried by the shaft to come in and out of contact with the cam or pin on said mal letsplice, substantially as set forth. v
2. In a dental plugger, the combination of a spring-controlled tool-plunger, a mallet for the plunger provided with a recess, a bellcrank lever fulcrumed to the casing or body portion of the plugger and arranged to engage said recess, a spring arranged to exert its pressure against the mallet, a shell loosely spliced to said mallet, a spring arranged to exert its pressure against the shell, a cam or pin arranged on one of the malletfsplices, a jointed drive-shaft stepped in said shell and moved back and forth by the latter, and a cam carried by the shaft to be brought in and out of contact with the cam or pin on said malletsplice by a movement of the bell-crank lever, substantially as set forth.
3. ln a dental plugger, the combination of a spring-controlled tool-plunger, a mallet for the plunger provided With a recess, a bellcrank lever fulcrumed to the casing or body portion of the plu gger and arranged to engage said recess, a sliding plate provided with a rest for the bell-crank lever, a spring arranged to exert its pressure against the mallet, a shell loosely spliced to said mallet, a spring arranged to exert its pressure against the shell, a cam or pin arranged on one of the mallet-splices, a jointed driveshaft stepped in said shell and moved back and forth by the latter, and a cam carried by the shaft to be brought in and out of contact with the cam or pin on said mallet-splice by a movement of the bell-crank lever, substantially as set forth.
4. In a dental plugger, the combination of a spring-controlled tool-plunger, a tip for the latter, a series of notches, and a pin or lug arranged with relation to the plunger and its tip, whereby the tool carried by said plunger maybe set at different angles, and means, substantially as described, for actuating the plunger.
5. In a dental plugger, the combination of a spring-controlled tool-plunger provided with a transverse pin or lug, the plunger-tip .provided at its free end with a series of diametricallylopposed notches for engagement IOO IIO
with said pin or lug, wherebyr the tool oar-` ried by said plunger may be set at. different angles, and means, substantially as described, for actuating the plunger.
6. In a dental plugger, the combination of a tool-plunger, a mallet for actuating the plunger, a drive-shaft, and earns arranged. with relation to the mallet and'shaft, whereby i the revolution of the latter causes an impact 1o of said mallet against-said plunger, a `bell- Crank lever for engagement with the mallet,
