To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that We, JOHN L. COLES and DAVID H. OOLEs, both citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sinkcrs for Fishing-Tackle, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a sinker for fishing-tackle, said sinker being so arranged that it can be made lighter or heavier without being removed from the line, as set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a section of a sinker with disks or sections, the section being taken along the line 00 :0, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a view of a sinker with disks on a line. Fig. 3 is asection of a sinker without disks. Fig. 4. is a section of a disk. Fig. 5 isaplan view of a disk.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.

The sinker is shown as consisting of two parts, A B, joined by screw-threads. The line 0 passes through the sinker. The sinker has at its lower enda cavity, D, and scallops or recesses D, extending radially in the outer edge of the wall of the cavity, into which the line C can sink when the sinker scrapes over the bottom, thus saving the line from chafing on the bottom.

When it is desired to increasthe-weight of the sinker, the parts A B are screwed apart and one or more disks or sections, E, are placed between theparts A B, and said sections E and partsA B being then screwed together will form a sinker of increased weight. As the sections E have slots F, said sections can he slipped on or off the line 0 without dismounting the parts A B, or either of them, from the line. It is only necessary to make one part, A or B, movable or slidable along the line C, so that when the parts A Bare disconnected the movable part of the sinker can be separated sufficiently from the other part by sliding along the line C to enable the disks or sections E to be placed between the parts A B and to be screwed in place.

To diminish the weight of the sinker, the sinker part B can be unscrewed from the disk E, to which it is connected, after which one or more disks can be unscrewed and slipped off the line. The part B being then replaced or screwed in place, a sinker of diminished weight is obtained. As the part B and disks E are readily rotatable on the line, said part B and disks F can be readily screwed into place and unscrewed without twisting the line.

The disks E and sinker parts A B are hollow or perforated to allow the line C to readily pass through said disks and sinker parts.

WVhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A fishing-line sinker consisting of the end parts, A and B, each having a central orifice extending entirely through it for the lengthwise passage of the line and interposed removable and replaceable sections E, each having a radial slot, F, to receive the line, substantially as described.

2. A fishing-line sinker consisting of the two parts A and B, each having a screw-thread and a central orifice extending entirely through it for the lengthwise passage of the line, and the gether and to the screw-threaded parts of the sinker, and each section having a radial slot, F, to receive the line, substantially as described.

3. A fishing-line sinker containing at one provided with scallops or recesses D, substantially as described. It is hereby certified that the assignee, The Empire State Manufacturing Company, in Letters Patent No. 402,231, granted April 30, 1889, upon the application of Johr L. Ooles and David H. Goles, of Brooklyn, New York, for an improvement in Sinker: for Fishing-Lines, should have been described and specified as The Empire Stat Manufacturing Company, a corporation organized under the laws of the State of Net Jersey, and doing business at Jersey City, N. J and New York, N. Y.,- and that the sai1 Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may-conforn to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
