PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN Z. GIFFORD, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
CORE FOR CASTING S-TRAPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed December 15 1888.
Patent No. 401,026, dated April 9, 1889.
Serial No. 293,763. (No model.) v
To a/ZZ whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Z. GIEEORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the co'unty of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oores for (lasting S-Traps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a core for an S-trap which can be removed from the casting and used an indefinite number of times.
To this end my invention consists in a core constructed for casting` an S-trap of metal in such a manner that it can be removed from the casting and used again and again.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view showing my improved core put together ready for placing in the mold. Fig. 2 is a view of one of the end sections of the core, showing lthe manner in which it is joined to the central sections. Fig. 3 is a View in cross-section of the central pieces of the core through the line c 0c.
My improved core for casting S-traps is preferably made of brass or iron, and is composed of iive sections, (represented by a, b, c, cl, and e.) The end sections, a, and b, one of which is shown in Fig. 2, are provided with pins p, which pass through and hold in position the central parts of the core.
The central part of the core is composed of the sections c, d, and e, which, when placed together, as shown, are perforated in the direction of the dotted lines to receive the pins p.
The core, when its sections are assembled together, as shown, is placed in the mold, which may be either of sand or metal, and the operation of casting the trap is proceeded with. The trap when completed will have the shape representedby the dotted lines g, having a collar and opening at f. Vvvhen the casting is completed and suiiciently cool, itis removed from the mold. Then the sections of the core a. and b are iirst pulled out. Then the section c is removed, and then the sections cl and e are separately taken out through the opening f. The opening f is then closed by a screw-plug, which may be removed for cleaning the trap when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
is f
sisting of the end sections, c and b, provided with pins p, passing through the central part of the core to hold it in position, said central portion being divided longitudinally into the A metallic core for casting an S-trap, con-
