Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDRE ROBERTS, OF PATTONVILLE, TEXAS.
MEDICAL COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,793, dated April 2, 1889. Application filed November 17, 1888. Serial No. 291,135. (N0 specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDRE RoBERTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Patton- Ville, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Medical Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a compound to be used as a gargle or wash in the treatment of the mouth, throat, &c., when the mucous membrane of the said parts is affected by the use of tobacco, opium, or morphine, alcoholic drinks, &c., and also in cases of indigestion, dyspepsia, malarial and typhoid fevers, &c.; and it consists of the following ingredients, in about the proportions mentioned: Fluid extract of eucalyptus, thirty-two parts; fluid ex tract of ladys-slipper, (Cypripedtum) one part; fluid extract of gentian, (Genticmoa) two parts; fluid extract of balmony, (Ohelone glabra,) one part; oil of Sassafras, twenty-four parts. The extract of ladys-slipper is added to the extract of eucalyptus and thoroughly mingled therewith, after which the remaining ingredients are successively added.
The manner of applying the compound is as follows: From twenty-five to forty drops of the compound are placed in four ounces of water, and then dividing the said mixture into three parts the first part is used to thoroughly rinse the mouth, the second part is used as a gargle for the throat, and the third part is swallowed.
The compound cleanses, soothes, and heals the membrane.
After a person has been an habitual user of tobacco, opium, or alcoholic drinks for some time the mucous membrane of the mouth, throat, and stomach becomes diseased and coated, so that its action (if it acts at all) is imperfect, thereby destroying the taste and rendering digestion imperfect and consequently impairing the appetite. The alcohol terious acids; but the result in either case is the same-namely, the membranes refuse to act normally. The compound acts on the membranes as an irritant, causing them to throw off the matter which obstructs their action, and then healing them and restoring them to healthy action. The result of this is that the taste of the patient is restored, thereby causing the appetite to return, and the digestion is improved. Further, the compound acts as a laxative and also as a nerve tonic, thereby restoring the tone of the entire system.
The properties of the various ingredients of the compound, taken individually, are as follows: Eucalyptus acts directly on the salivary glands, membranes, tissues, &c., and by its pungent or acrid properties cleanses and heals the same. The gentian improves the digestion, and also, being bitter in taste, aids the eucalyptus in cleansing the tissues. The ladys-slipper acts on the nervous system in the way of a tonic. The Chelone acts as a laxative, and the oil of sassafras, although possessing healing properties, is used mainly as a vehicle to
