GURDON CONKLING, OF GLENS FALLS, NEIV YORK.
MAG N ETlC SEPARATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 400,747, dated. April 2, 1889.
Application filed July 12, 1888. $erial No. 279,755- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, GUnDoN CONKLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glens Falls, in the county of \Varren and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Magnetic Separators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in magnetic separators of that class which I have described in Letters Patent No. 383,863, granted to me June 5, 1888, said improvements being pointed out in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section in the plane x 00, Fig. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section in the plane y 1 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates an endless belt or apron which extends round two rollers, B B, mounted on shafts C O, and to which motion is imparted by a belt and pulley, or by any other suitable means. Above the primary apron A is situated a secondary apron, D, which extends in the same direction as the primary apron, and runs over two rollers, E E, mounted on shafts F F, to which motion is imparted by a belt and pulley, or by any other suitable means. The direction in which the two aprons move is indicated by arrows in Figs. 1 and 3, from which it will be seen that the lower strand of the secondary apron D runs in the same direction as the upper strand of the primary apron.
Across the lower strand of the secondary apron extend one or more metallic plates, G, which are best made of soft iron and magnetized by the action of magnets H. I prefer to use electro-magnets for this purpose, but permanent magnets could be used. The plates G are supported by screw-bolts a a, Fig. 2, so that they can be raised or lowered, and their distance from the apron D can be adjusted.
In the example represented by the drawings 1 have shown three plates G, but the number of plates may be increased or decreased as experience will dictate.
Beneath the secondary apron D is situated a scraper 'or brush, 1), which is mounted on a shaft, I, and to which motion is imparted by a belt and pulley, or by any other suitable means.
J is a hopper, through which the material to be treated is fed to the primary apron A. As the material drops upon this apron it is carried along and made to pass beneath one or more of the magnetized plates G, and by the action of these plates the iron particles contained in the material are attracted so that they adhere to the secondary apron D, by which they are carried along until they drop oit by their inherent gravity, or until they are swept oi'tf by the brush b. These iron particles are carried into the receptacle R. All the particles carried by the primary apron and not acted upon by the magnetized plate or plates G drop into the receptacle R.
I do not claim in this application anything shown and described in mypaient, No. 383,863, above named.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a primary apron, of a secondary apron situated over and made to extend in the same direction as the primary apron, a magnetized plate secured in proximity to the secondary apron, and suitable driving mechanism for actuating the aprons, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GURDON CONKLING.
