To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. OKEY, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows and Pulver'- izers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of a combined machine for cutting clods and stalks, pulverizing the ground, and harrowing it in one and the same operation, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure l represents an end section of my device on the line a; az, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 represents a similar view on the line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the machine. Fig. 4 isa longitudinal section of a part of the machine on the central line of the axle, showing the arrangement of the hangers and sleeves.
In detail' the machine comprises a frame composed of a top cross-bar, cb, to which are bolted hangers h, as shown in Fig. 3. y a is the axle, upon which are mounted sleeves SZ, made in short sections, and also wheels w, which are composed of a central disk having blades bZ arranged on both sides, as shown. 4
The hangers h are mounted on the outside of the sleeves SZ, the two outer ones formed with an open slot at the bottom to receive the ends of the arms a2, which also pass over the sleeves SZ, the axle c. passing through the wheel, sleeves, hangers, and these arms, holding the parts all together.
The axle a is headed at one end and secured by a nut, n, at the other. The arms a2 extend to the rear, the outer ones being in the form shown in Fig. 1. The centralone, which is marked a', is slightly different in construction, as shown in Fig. 2,being curved at the inner end to hook over the sleeve, having a bearing on the outside thereof. These arms carry on the outer end the harrow-bar hb, having small teeth t', and in front of this harrow-bar the arms a. a2 are mortised to admit larger teeth, Z, having beveled sharp points, as shown, which assist in cutting and breaking such clods as may pass between the disks and blades of the at l to the curved lever Z, which extends forward and upward through a mortise in the pole or tongue 9, and this lever is provided with a catch, c, which engages with the teeth of a ratchet-wheel, rw, which is bolted to the top of the pole p, as shown in Fig. 2. s is the seat ,for the driver, which is attached to the rear of the pole and some distance above it. From this seat the driver can reach the curved lever Z with his hand, and by moving it back= ward or forward can raise or lower the harrow, as desired. Thus in Fig. l the lever is shown thrown back and the harrow is in position for use, its teeth reaching to or near the ground. In Fig.- 2 the lever is shown thrown somewhat forward, whereby the harrow-bar, with its teeth, is lifted, and the same operation also raises and lowers the larger teeth, t, which are connected to the arms of the harrow-bar.
In Fig. 4 the construction and arrangement of the hangers, wheels, and the arms of. the harrow-bar are shown-the hangers h mounted outside the shouldered portion of the sleeves SZ, the ends of the arms of the harrow-bar between the jaws of the hanger h, and the axle of the machine operating as a rod to bind all the parts together and hold them in place.
In the drawings I have simply shown the machine composed of one section of four disks or wheels; but as many or as few of these disks or wheels, or sections of disks or wheels, may be connected in one machine as desired. The method of constructing the disks, mounting, combining, and arranging the parts will be the same in either case.
The machine operates as follows: The team is hitched in the usual manner to the machine, and when it is drawn forward the wheels w revolve, their blades striking and cutting up cornstalks, clods, or heavy lumps of ground. The larger teeth will strike any clods which fall between the blades of the wheels, and the harrow-teeth when thrown down by means of the lever Z will assist in pulverizing the larger pieces and leveling the ground. The blades bl may be formed integral with the disks of the Wheels, or be made of separate pieces bolted to such disks; but it is easier to cast them solid with the disks, and the blades are sharpened in order to more quickly cut the clods and stalks.
I am aware that pulverizers have been constructed with wheels having' sharpened teeth and blades of various kinds mo uuted upon an axle, adapted to be drawn by horses or mules; but I am not aware that they have been constructed, arranged, and operated in the manner herein shown and described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. A combined harrow and pulverizer comprising a frame-Work, hangers connected beneath the top thereof, a longitudinal axle having bearings in the ends of such frame and passing through sleeves upon which such hangers are mounted, Wheels mounted on such axle comprising a central disk, with cuttingblades upon either side and at right angles to the plane thereof, a series of arms mounted upon the sleeves, through which the axle passes, and connected to such hangers and extending rearward, and a harrow connected to the rear end of such arms, With suitable mechanism for raising and lowering such harroW mechanism, substantially as shown and 3o described.
2. ln a combined harrow and pulverizer, a framework, a series of hangers connected beneath the top thereof, mounted upon sectional sleeves supported upon the axle, an 35 such axle between the adjacent ends of the 4e sleeves, arms alsov mounted uponthe sleeves, connected to such hangers, 'and extending rearward between each pair of disks, a harrow= frame connected to such arms, and a series of cutting-teeth, also connected thereto between 45 the axle of the machine and the harrow-frame, with means, substantially as described, for elevating and lowering such hai-row mechanism.
