UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STELLA D. BIDDISON, OF FORT IVORTH, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL M. BIDDISON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
RETORT VA PORIZER AND SUPERH EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,291, dated March 26,1889.
Application filed May 22, 1888\ Serial No. 274,644. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STELLA D.B1DDisoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retort Vaporizers and Super-heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in retort Vaporizers and superheaters, having for its object the provision of simple and highly efficient means for thoroughly and effectively superheating the vapor of water and oil.
The invention therefore comprises the details of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view. 4 is a side elevation of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 6 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the superheating-chamber on the line a; as, Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the pan wherein my vaporizer is disposed.
B is the water-boiler wherein the steam is generated. To one end of this boiler is connected one end of a steam-pipe, b, parallel with said boiler, and said pipe has a rightangular connection with an oil vaporizing pipe, 0, into the end of which opens the oilsupply pipe D. This oil-vaporizing pipe O at its ends is connected by suitable means with a lower parallel vapor-pipe, d, from one end of which opens an inclined apertured burnerpipe, d, located in the pan A.
E is a horizontally-disposed spreader and superheater located on top of the vaporizer. Said spreader and superheater is hollow and is centrally divided into two chambers, e e, by a partition, 6', between one end of which and the end wall of said chamber is a narrow passage-way, 6 In this spreader are found two series of vertical holes or openings, a as shown. The oil-vaporizing pipe 0 is connected by means of a bent pipe, 6 with one end of the spreader or superheater E, and to this end, near the other side, is also connected one end of an inclined vapor-conducting pipe, F, which at its other end opens into the vapor=pipe d, as shown.
G is the water-supply cup, wherein is disouter end into the water-supply cup G, the
right angular end thereof being adjacent the end of the pipe 9, over the valve or float g. By means of this arrangement a uniform supply or feed of water to the boiler is obtained by reason of the constant pressure of steam from the upper part of the boiler.
Heretofore the oversupply of steam in the water-boiler would force the water back into the cup, and thus greatly interfere with or retard the working of the vaporizer, whereas by means of my invention the steam passing from the boiler into said water-cup will provide a uniform supply of water to the boiler and preventthe back-pressure of said water.
In practice, as usual, a small quantity of oil is placed in the pan A and a light applied thereto, so as to heat the vaporizer. The respective parts being supplied with water andoil, the heat from the burning oil will cause the vapor to arise, and the steam upon passing into the oil-pipe d will intermingle therewith and pass into one of the chambers, e, of the spreader or superheater, and the flames from burning oil passing through the holes or apertures e and against the under side of said spreader will thoroughly and effectively superheat the combined vapors, which, after passing through the narrow passage-way e and through the other chamber, 6, will be thoroughly vaporized, and upon passing through the pipe 6 into the vapor-pipe 0 they will be further heated, and then, passing through the burner-pipe, will be ignited, and thus supply the flames with a vapor possessing superior heating qualities. Throughout the operation the water is being uniformly fed to the boiler by means of my improved cup.
I claim as my invention 1. As an improvement in retort-Vaporizers, the combination, with the series of pipes, of the upper horizontal]y-disposed spreader and superheater arranged over said pipes and divided into two chambers communicating at one end, and havinga series of holes or apertures extending through said chambers, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the boiler and the oil and vapor pipes, of the upper horizontally-
