DRAFT-EVENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 399,982, dated March 19, 1889.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. GAMBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adair, in the county of Adair and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draft-Eveners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in draft-eveners; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 are plan views showing different positions of my improved evener. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the tongue of a reaper of the usual construction.

B designates a lateral bracket or arm, con structed of wood, iron, or any suitable material, which is secured to the tongue near its rear end and projects horizontally to the lefthand side of the same.

C designates an evener-lever, made of wood, iron, steel, or other suitable material, and pivoted on the upper side of the bracket B, and having one arm projecting through a keeper, D, secured to the upper side of a transverse bar, E, mounted upon the end of the bracket B.

F is a brace, having its rear end connected to the pivot of the evener-lever O, and having its front 'end secured to the tongue A in advance of the bracket B.

G designates a double-hinge bracket mounted on the tonguein advance of the bracket B and projecting to the right or left hand side of the same, as the case may require. rl"o the end of this bracket G is pivoted thc bracebar H, projecting from the said bracket in opposite directions to both sides of the tongue. The whiffletrees are secured to the ends of the brace-bar, as will be readily understood.

I designates the parallel draw-bars,having their opposite ends secured, respectively, to the right-hand end of the brace-bar Il and to the end of the shorter arm of the evener-lever C, as clearlyishown; and J designates the parallel draw-bars, having their opposite ends secured, respectively, to the end of the longer arm of the evener-lever C and to the bracebar H between the pivot thereof and its lefthand end.

It will be observed that I have provided a very simple draft-evener by means of which I can use one horse on one side of the tongue and three on the other side. The device is light, and the several parts can be readily arranged in the most convenient position for the proper operation of the evener. The drawbars I J, upon Which the greatest amount of strain comes, are constructed, as shown, of parallel bars. By this arrangement I am enabled to secure great strength of the parts with very small Weight.

It will be observed that the fulcrum of the evener-bar is on the same side of the tongue as the three horses, and the single horse is thereby given the benefit of the greater leverage, and the several parts are so proportioned that the draft upon the single horse will be equalf to one-fourth of the entire draft.

The draw-bar J is somewhat shorter than the draw-bar I, Aand the draw-bars are of such a length that the brace-bar will be held at the proper distance in advance of the evener-le ver, to prevent the singletree interfering with the operation of the device.

It will be observed that the shorter arm of the evener-lever is connected to the longer arm of the brace-bar, and vice versa, so that the draft is applied to the tongue at its rear end, and by reason of thegreater leverage given the single horse he is permitted to forge ahead, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to prevent the machine being drawn to one side.

The improved draft-evener, comprising the tongue, the bracket B, secured to the tongue near its rear end, the evener-lever mounted oil-said bracket, the double-hinge bracket G, pivote-d to the tongue in advance oi' the bracket B, the brace-barpivoted to the ends of the bracket B, the draw-bars I, extending between one end of the brace-bar and the shorter arm of the evenerlever, and the draw-bars J, extending between the longer arm of the evener-leverandthe brace-bar,t11e l shorter arm of the evener-lever, the drawsaid draw-bars bei-ng constructed of parallel bars, as set forth.

2. The improved draft-evener, comprising the tongue,the braoketB, secured to the ton gue and projecting to one side thereof, the bracket G, pivoted to the tongue and projected to the opposite side, the evener-lever pivoted on the bracket B, the brace-bar pivoted between its ends to the end of the bracket G, the drawbars I, composed of parallel plates extendinggfl between the end of the baree-bar and the bars J, extending between the brace-bar and the longer arm of the evener-lever, and the brace extending from the pivot of the evenerlever to the tongue, as specified.
