VEHICLE SPRING.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEROME WETMORE, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,955, dated March 19, 1 889.
Application filed April 2, 1888. Serial No- 269,224=. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEROME W. WETMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed a new and useful ID1- provement in Vehicle-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spiral torsionsprings when applied to semi-elliptical springs of vehicles.
The objects of my improvement are to more completely combine the advantages of the conical coil, the cylindrical coil, and the torsion-springs in their applicationto semi-elliptical springs of carriages. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the spring applied to a semi-e1liptical spring as a base; Fig. 2, a vertical View of the spring on its base, the body of the vehicle being removed; Fig. 3, the same view with a modification of the form of the spring, giving it greater flexibility by means of the additional arm and curve. In both the down-pressure is balanced evenly on each side of the base. This is substantially the same in all the applications of the spring. Fig. 4 is a vertical view when the body of the vehicle is not over the axle; Fig. 5, a front view of Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a View of Figs. 4 and 5 from the side of the vehicle.
The springs maybe of round steel and the ends flattened where attached to the semi-' elliptical spring. The ends attached to the body would then be turned, as in Fig. 4, and held by clips.
The upper leaf of the half-elliptical spring will have greater distances from its ends to the ends of the leaf below it than in the elliptical spring, because of the increased contact with c, c, and c as the springs are depressed by the load.
WVhat I claim is 1. The oblong spiral spring, in combination with the body of the vehicle and the semi elliptical base, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the spiral spring of irregular shape with the semi-elliptical spring and the body of the vehicle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
