JAMES T. HAMBAY, 0F swIssvALE, PENNsYLvANIA.
QiGNAL POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,889, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed October 6, 1888. Serial N0. 287,406. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs T. HAMBAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Signal Frames or Supports, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in the construction of frames or supports for semaphore-signals.
.It is customary at various points in yards and other places where a number of lines of track pass to arrange a number of semaphores or other signals on two or more posts or uprights supported by a horizontal beam, which in turn is raised a considerable distance above the tops of the cars. Difliculty has been encountered in constructing such frames as will prevent their becoming loose and therefore dangerous on account of the comparatively large surface which they pre sent to the wind and on account of the shocks and jars to which they are subjected in operating the signals.
In general terms, the invention consists in the construction and combination of mechanical devices or elements, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved semaphore frame or bracket. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 00 as, Fig. 1.
Upon the upper end of the vertical or main post 1 are bolted or otherwise secured the cross-beams 2, their points of attachment to opposite sides of the vertical post being about midway of their length. beams 2, at points near their outer ends, are secured the sigml-posts 3 by suitable bolts passing through the beams and posts. The lower ends of the posts extend a short distance below the cross-beams and are tied together and to the vertical post 1 by horizontal tie-frames 4, preferably formed of anglebars bolted to said posts 3 and the vertical post 1. A strap, 5, passing over the upper end of the post 1, and having its ends bolted to the lower ends of the signal-posts 3, is employed for partially relieving the cross-beams of the weight of the signal-posts and also as an additional brace to prevent lateral swaying of the signal-post.
Between the cross- In order to brace the signal-posts 3 as against lateral swaying transverse of. the cross-beams 2, I provide truss-rods 6, two on each side, extending from a common bracket, 7, on the post 1 to points on the signal-posts 3 above the cross-beams.
In order to provide bearing-points for the truss-rods outside of the frame, queen or straining posts 8, over which the truss-rods pass, are secured upon the cross-beams at suitable points between their outer ends and the post 1. The signal-posts are also tied together at points above the cross-beam 2, preferably at the upper ends of the truss-rods, by a tie-rod,
The semaphores 10 and lanterns 11 are secured to the signal-posts 3 in the usual or any suitable manner, and are operated by a system of rods, 12, and bell-cranks 13, in the usual manner.
I claim herein as my invention 1. A frame or support for semaphores or other signals, having in combination a main post, cross-beams secured to said post, signal-posts supported by the cross-beams on opposite sides of the main post, the ends of the signal-posts extending below the crossbeams, and tie-beams connecting the lower v ends of the signal-posts to each other and to the main posts, substantially as set forth.
2. A frame or support for semaphores or other signals, having in combination a main post, cross-beams secured to said post, signal-posts supported by the cross-beams and having their lower ends extending below the cross-beams, tie-beams connecting the lower ends of the signal-posts to each other and to the main post, and a strap connected to the lower ends of the signal-post and passing over the main post, substantially as set forth.
3. A frame or support for semaphores or other signals, having in combination a main post, cross-beams secured to said post, signal-posts supported by the cross-beams on opposite sides of the main posts, straining or queen posts secured to the cross-beams, and truss-rods having their ends connected to the main post and to the signal-posts at points above the cross-beams and passing over the straining-posts, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
Witnesses: JAMES T. II'AMBAY.
