CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,333, dated March 12, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK. JOHNSON, a citizen of the l'nited States, residing in Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating the Locking-Catch of a Car-Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to render more complete and convenient the operation of car-couplings of that class shown in the Barnes patent, No. 337,650, or any of that class having a similar construction, and it relates to a novel means for operating the swinging catch for locking or unlocking the pivoted coupling-arms, all of which will be more fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of a suitable carcoupling having my invention combined therewith. Fig. 9 is a front elevation of a portion of a car, showinga similar view of the device for operating the lr, cking-catch and holding it in position until it is desired to release it, also a front elevation of the drawhead and coupling. Fig. represents a front elevation, showing a modification of the operating and holding device, and Fig. 4 is a detached side elevation of the holding device.
In said drawings 1 represents suitable carcoupling to which my invention is adapted. The draw-head 2 is preferably made of castiron, as being the best and cheapest material. It is made hollow in the usual way, and is provided with the pivoted angular-shaped coupling-bar 2, secured to the draw-head by the pin hen this coupling-bar is closed or secured to another coupling, itis in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Fig. 1 it is shown as when locked in position, the inner portion of the coupling-bar 2 being shown by dotted lines 4:. The locking catch is also shown by the (btted lines 5 in Fig. 1. It is pivoted to the draw-head by a pin, 6, so as to swing thereon.
These kinds of car-couplings are usually made with an inclined guideway at the top and bottom or above and below the lockingcatch 5 shown in Fig. 1, so that when the catch is drawn upward it swings back or around on the pivot 6 out of the way of the 5' end '7 of the coupling-bar 9, so as to allow it to swing open and unconple, and when it drops down it swings around so that one of the notches 8 (see Fig. 1) catches the end 7 of the coupling-bar 2, and thereby looks it; but as the construction and operation of this kind of car-coupling are old and well known, afurther description here is unnecessary.
With these kinds of car-couplings during the operation of uncoupling it is necessarithat the locking-catch should not only be lifted up, but it should be also held up until the uncoupling is effected, and the object of my invention is to do this, as it cannot be conveniently done by hand.

From this description it will be seen that b y moving the handle 13 and turning the uncoupling-bar the locking-catch may be either lifted or lowered, and that by drawing the uncoupling-bar longitudinally to one side, so as to move the arm 1* sidewise up along the inclined camway, the locking-catch may be lifted up and held in such position until released by pushing the uncoupling-bar in the opposite direction, and thereby permitting the locking-catch to drop into its locking po- Sition.
