Description
(No Model.)
G. GLIDDEN.
HAND PLOW AND WEEDER.
Patented Mai. 5, 1889.
WIZW'ESSES M w M W WW UNITED STATES PATENT rricn,
GREENLIEF GLIDDEN, OF BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR Tl) ELLIOTT EUGENE GLIDDEN, OF SAME PLACE HAND PLOW AND WEEDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,143, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed September 10, 1888. Serial No. 235,062. (No modehi To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GREENLIEF GLIDDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident i of Buchanan, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new F and useful Improvements in Combined Hand i Plow and \Veeder; and I do hereby declare f that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will en- 5 able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined hand plow and weeder.
The object is to produce a device which shall be of such construction that it may be used either as a hand plow or weeder with- 5 out the necessity of changing any of its mechanismas by removing certain parts 1 and replacing them with others-and to prci duce a device which by reversing or turning i over may be used alternately as a plow and weeder, and which shall be simple of construction, efficient and durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.
\Vith these objects in view the invention i consists in the combination, with a suitable standard provided with a transverse handle at its upper end and a shovel at its lower end, of an adjustable frame pivoted thereto and carrying a traction-wheel for supporting i the device; furthermore, in the combination, 1' with the said adjustable frame having suitably-located bearin =sleeves and set-screws, working in apertures in said sleeves, of a short standard secured with its bifurcated 1 ends in said sleeves and provided at its opi posite end with a weeding-blade or any other similar cutting-instrument, and, finally, in the various novel details of construction whereby its objects are attained.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device, showing it ready for use for plowing. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it in position for needing, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the attachments adapted to be removably secured to the device.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A denotes the inclined standard, provided at its upper end with a transverse handle and at 1 its lower end with an ordinary shovel, B.
C denotes the frame hereinbeforc referred to, which consists of the curved bars D, the inner ends of which are formed with registering apertures E, through two opposite ones of which is inserted the bolt F, which also passes through the lower end of the inclined standard, which thus permits of the i said bars being adj ustably secured to the inclined standard. The other ends of these parallel curved bars are formed with aper- ;tures, in which the axle of the tractionwheel G is journaled. These curved bars are braced by the brace-bars II against any abrupt jar caused by the wheel orthe shovel of the standard coming in contact with a stone or similar obstruction.
I denotes two bearing-sleeves secured to the intermediate portions of the curved parallel bars, and has working in apertures therein set-screws .I. The bifurcated ends of a short curved standard, K, are removably and adjustably secured in these sleeves by means of the setscrews, while the lower end of the standard is provided with a weeding-blade, L.
It maybe found desirable to remove the weeder and substitute other cutting implements. For instance, in the cultivation of strawberries a cutting implement such as shown in. Fig. 3 would be well adapted for cutting the runners of the vines, and various other cutters of well-known construction may be employed for various other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a hand-plow, the con'ibination of 'the inclined standard, a shovel secured at its lower end, an adjustable curved frame secured to the said standard, a traction-wheel journaled therein, sleeves secured to the said curved frame, and a curved standard working in the said sleeves and carrying a cutting implement, and means for securing the same in position, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses GREEN'L-IE i GLIDDEX.
