lie it known that I, MAX SCHNEIDER, asubject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Boos, near Nuremberg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dr-aftRegulating Devices for Stoves or Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in d ra'ft-regulatin g devices for stoves or furnaces; and the object of this invention is to effect the regulating ot the energy of the fire in a most simple but efiicient way by Operating the dampers for regulating the area of the passages ot' the air and the products of combustion by means of a single handle. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the lower part of a magazine-stove provided with my improved device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of an angular slide or gate, which serves to regulate both the ingress of air to the grate and the egress of the results of comhustion to the hase-iiue'of the stove. Figs. 3 and i are vertical sections of the stove, showing the regulating device in diiterent positions; and Figs. 5 to 8 illustrate a modification of both the regulating device and the base of the stove.

A is the damper or gate, placed in front ot the stove underneath the ash-pit or in the door of the latter, serving to regulate the area of the passage of the air to the combustionchamber and the passage of the products of comlmstion to the base-flue of the stove. 1n crosssection this damper forms a right angle, the vertical part a of. which is adapted to (over the air-passage in front of the stove, while the horizontal part Z2 is provided with a notch, l), admitting the passage 01. the products oi combustion through the base-flue to the chimney l). The notch I) is so arranged that when the air-passage in front of the stove is opened. the passage through the horizontal division 13 is closed, and vice versa. The direct communication of the eombustioirchamher 0 with the chimneyfine is admitted through the (meningc andrcgulated by means of the hinged damper c, which is actuated by the handled rod I] through the inter-mediation of the lever 71. The latter is connected with its upper end to the hinged damper e, and engages at its lower end by a pin, (1, with the rod (Z, passing the damper A, where it is provided with a handle outside of the stove.
As the red (I freely passes the damper A, the damper I; may be actuated independently of the damper A and without regard to its position. l'l'owever, it must be understood that whenever the air-passage at a. begins to open, the communication with the base-flue must have been discontinued, in order to prevent the fresh air from entering into the base-flue oi the stove. T his combination of the regulating elements with another is of considerable importance, because a part of the carbonic-oxide gases accumulating within the upper part of the stove is permitted to escape into the chimney-line in any position of the damper A. If the slide 1) is duly regulated, an intensive smoke-consumin g is effected, as the gases generated by the combustion are forced by the natural draft of the chimney to pass the glowing fuel upon the grate on their way to the base-tine mand the chimney-tine u, when the damper c is closed, and the mechanical eiifect is thereby considerably increased. However, care must' be taken in this case that the air-passage will be entirely closed, and in order that no mistake can happen the slide Z) and the damper a are either formed in one piece or they are so intin'iatel connected by means of the rod d that the position of the slide 1; simultaneously determines that of the damper, as heretofore mentioned, Figs. 1 to 3. In case that the fire shall be kept slowly burning without radiating heat to the walls of the stove the air-passage has to be entirely closed and the damper (1 opened by moving the rod (Z into the position shown in Fig. 4. of the drawings.

Having now fully described my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- 1. As an improvement in draft-regulators for stoves, the combination of the gate hav ing apertures for the passage of air and the carbonic-oxide gases the handled rod for op-- crating said gate the hinged damper, and the lever connected to said damper and to said rod, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improvement in draft-regulators, the combination, with a magazine stove or furnace having a lower base-flue, of the gate having a front aperture for the passage of air and a lower aperture :for the passage of the carbonic-oxide gases, the handled rod loosely connected to said gate, the upper hinged damper, and the lever connected to said damper at its upper end and to said rod at its lower end, substantially as set forth.
