SAW-GUMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,066, dated .hlarch 5, 1889.
Application filed September 27, 1888 Serial No. 286,498 No model.)
I) all Hill/(17M [1 11m ('(HLfQl'lb:
Be it known that l, CALVIN S. MCMILLAN, a citizen of the United Stat-es, residing at East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and 5 State of Michigan, have invented certain new i and useful Improvements in Saw-Gummers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a tull, clear, and exact description of the same, 1 reierenecbeing had to the annexed drawings, 1 making a part of this specification, and to i the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for gumming' saws, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be simple in construction, efficient in operation, and which maybe operated by hand or foot power, as circumstances may require. p
The novelty resides in the peculiarities of construction and the combinations arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more it ully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sawgnmmcr constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail in front elevation.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame supported upon the legs B, which are braced by the brace-rods (1. Journal ed in suitable boxes, near the hmgitudinal cent-erof this frame, is the transverse shaft C, carrying the wheel I), the sprocket-wheel l), and the pinion F. Journalcd in suitable boxes, near the front end of the frame A, is the transverse shaft G, which carries the pulley 7) and the emery-wheel or gummer II, which is removably secured upon its shaft by means of the nut c.
I I are pendent arms at the forward end of the frame A, said arms being formed with lugs (l, on which the longitudinal timbers of v the frame rest, as clearly shown in Fig. .l. i Across the top of the arms I is the bar .T, i
which forms a support for the table, hereinafter described.
c is a straining-bolt passed. through the bar J and the barf, secured to one of the longitudinal timbers of the frame, and one of the arms I, as seen in Fig. 1, and provided with a thumb-nut, g, by means of which the parts may be tightened as they wear. The arms I are suitably braced by the brace-rods h.
Journaled near the lower ends of the arms 1 is the crankshatt K, which carries the sprocket-wheel. L, around which and. the sprocket-wheel E on the shaft C passes the endless sprocket-chain M.
N is an endless belt passing around the pulleys l) and Z).
O is a side extension of the frame A, near the rear thereof and l" is a shaft journaled therein and carrying the large pinion Q, which meshes with the pinion F on the shaft 0. The extended end of this shaft.- P is squared, and is provided with a suitable crank and handle, R.
Pivoted on the bar J, at the front end of the frame A, is the table or saw-rest S, which is thus pivoted in order to enable the operator to give the saw the various movements necessary in gunnning.
The operation is apparent. The saw is placed upon the table S and motion given to the emery-wheel ll, either by means of a person turningthe crank and handle R, which impart-s motion to said wheel through. the medium of the pinions Q F, shaft C, pulleys D b, shaft G, and belt N, or by the operator using the crank-shaft K as a treadle, and thus, through the medium of the sprocket-wheels L E, shafts G and G, sprocket-chain M, pulleys D and b, and belt N, rotating the emerywheel or gummer.
I sometimes use a guard, '1, over the wheel. or gummer, as seen in Fig. 1, which serves also to keep the belt N from working oit' the pulley l.
The periphery of the emery-wheel is formed upon two inclines, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to enable me to readily gum the different inclines ot the teeth of the saw.
\Vhat I claim as new isl. The combination, with the frame and the gumming-wheel, of the shaft C, journaled in said frame, the Wheel D on said shaft, the pulley Z) on the shaft of the 'gumming-Wheel, the belt connecting said pulley and Wheel D, the crank-shaft K, a sprocket chain and Wheel connection between said shafts K and O, and the pinion Q, provided With a crank-handle and constructed to impart motion to said shaft 0, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the frame, the shafts O and G, journaled therein, parallel with each other, the pinion F on the shaft 0, the pulley Z) and the emery-Wheel TI on the shaft G, the pulley D and sprocket-Wheel E on the shaft 0, and the endless belt N, of the the vpinion F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CALVIN S. MCMILLAN.
