MOLDING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,568, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed September 12, 1388. Serial No. 285,177. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Andover, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a machine capable of planing or dressing two sides of a piece of work, whether it be composed of regular or irregular curves, parallel or straight or tapering sides, and wholly regardless of the way the grain of the wood may run; and the invention consists of the combination ofnovel devices, all of which will be hereinafter fully set forth in the following specification and claims, and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming an inseparable part thereof", of which Figure 2 represents a sectional side elevation of a machine embodying my improvements, Fig. 1 being a general plan of same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of one of the cutter-heads. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan of same. A suitable frame, A, made, preferably, of
iron, is adapted to support the various mov- 1 able parts of my improved machine. At or near the front end of the machine may be located one or more bearings, a, for carrying a vertical shaft, B, upon which are mounted one end of each of the radial cutter-carrying frames 0 (1, at the free ends of which are provided bearings c c for the vertical shafts D D, upon which are mounted my improved cutter-heads E E. Belt-pulleys X X, of the proper size, are mounted upon the shaft B between the bearings c c of the radial frames C C, and are connected, one with a twisted with suitable pulleys, X. X, mounted upon the shafts D l), for driving the said cutterheads E E. The said shaft B may extend above the machine or through the floor below it for application of its driving-power.
My improved cutter-heads E E are preferably provided with a hub, e, and grooves 6, formed tangent with said hub, for the reception of the cutters Y, and when within the grooves the said cutters project slightly above the top surface of the cutter-head, and upon them rests a clamping-plate, E, having a concentric opening which is bored to fit the said hub e, the said clamping-plate being secured by cap-screws 6 which pass through it and are threaded to the said cutter-head at c Above said cutter-heads are mounted upon the same shafts, D D, independently-rotative heads F F, which are of larger diameter than said cutter-heads, and are chambered out on their under side, so as to fit down loosely over the said heads E E to a point just above the said cutters Y, which should project beyond their cutter-heads to a point about flush with the said heads F F. These latter heads,whilc the operator is passing the worl; to the cutters, bear against either side of a pattern which is tacked to the work (in the ordinary manner) by the action of a weight, G, hung to one end of a cord, g, passing vertically at one side of the machine over a grooved roll, g, mounted at one side of the machine-frameA, and thence horizontally over a horizontal grooved roll, mounted on one of either frames (1, and back to the other frame to which the end of said cord is attached.
By the above construction a more even pressure is obtained upon both sides of the work to be dressed than if a spring or springs were used instead of the cord and weight, not withstan di u g that springs could be substituted and give fairly good results.
The work is passed between two pairs of rolls, one pair being located forward of the cutter-heads E E and the other pair at their rear, but as close to them as possible, the lower rolls, H H, being mounted in suitable bearings formed in an adjustable bed or table, I, supported within the frame Aby verbelt, 0:, and the other by a straight belt, at, tical screw-shafts J, mounted as shown, and

be planed on both curved sides or edges rapidly, and by means of apattern, as previously mentioned, very evenly and to a given width or a varying width, as desired in case of other work than fellies.
The cutters which I consider preferable in a machine of this character are best illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7. These may be made up of segments, Y representing the cutters, and
5 Y the interposing separators; but for ordinary use I prefer to make the cutters of solid pieces Y, having their cutting-edges slotted, as at y, and by using a number of cutters in each head, as in Fig. 5, and taking care to set 5o them at varying heights, the slots y of some Another way of accomplishing the desired result is to make the slots y of varying widths, which will permit the cutters Y to be made of even or equal width or height and to I rest on the same horizontal plane within the cutter-heads.
In order to take a portion of the weight of the radial arms 0 C from the shaft B and to furnish a support for their free ends, small truck-wheels C are mounted upon studs secured to the under part of each of said frames 0, near their outer or free end, as shown in the drawings, and these are supported upon one of the transverse portions of the frame A.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a two-side molder, the combination, with a vertical driving shaft and pulleys thereon, of horizontal radial arms mounted upon said shaft, rotary cutter-heads and their driving-pulleys mounted upon an arbor run ning in the free ends of said horizontal arms, and means for maintaining an equal pressure of said arms automatically each toward the other and at varying distances apart.
2. In a two side molding machine, the combination, with a suitable frame having horizontal feed and pressure rolls, of an adjustable table over which the Work to be dressed is passed, a vertical driving-shaft and pulleys thereon, the horizontally-movable radial arms mounted upon said shaft, rotary cutter heads and their driving pulleys mounted upon an arbor running in the free ends of said radial arms, and means for maintaining an equal pressure of said arms automatically each toward the other and at varying distances apart, substantially for the purposes specified.
3. The combination of horizontally-movable radial arms provided at their free ends with an arbor and rotary cutterfheads and their drive-pulleys mounted thereon, and one or more trucks mounted on their under side and adapted to move upon a fixed support for partially sustaining their Weight, as set forth.
