THOB'IAS W. PATERSON, OF VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,440, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed October 8, 1888. Serial No. 287,575. (No model.)
T0 [1]] whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. PATERSON, a British subject, residing at Victoria, Vancouver Island, Province of British Columbia,
Canada, have invented a new and useful Car- Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplings, in which a block of iron sliding on an incline plane is made to actuate a pawl or catch to automatically drop the pin into coupling-link. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section embodying my invention, showing the position of sliding block D and pin (1 ready to couple the link. Fig. 2 is a section showing the link Z) coupled to drawhead'u. Fig. 3 is a section showing the pin G lifted up and resting on the pawl e ready for uncoupling. Fig. l is a plan to a reduced scale.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, a is the draw-head, sin1ilar in construction to the draw-heads now in use, with the exception of having a pocket cast on to receive the sliding block D and pawl, or catch 6.
I) is the coupling-link, similar to those now in use.
0 is the coupling-pin, also similar to those now used.
D is a block of iron cast with a slot to receive the end of pawl or catch 6, said block by gravity answering the-purpose of holding the coupling link in a horizontal position when uncoupled, as shown in Fig. 2; also of tipping pawl or catch 6, as shown in Fig. 3, when in the act of being uncoupled, and also answering the purpose of catching the point of the pin (1, as shown in Fig. 1, when ready for coupling.
6 is a pawl or catch pivoted in the drawhead a, with the end next pin 0 made heavier than tail end in sliding block, so that it will fall forward by its own gravity, said pawl A being for the purpose of holding up the pin 0 when uncoupling, and so soon as the link is withdrawn the block D will slide by its own gravity, tipping the pawl or catch 6 and allowing the pin 0 to drop down on the point of the sliding block D ready for coupling again, the act of coupling being done automatically by the link I), which is held in a horizontal position, entering the draw-head, and striking the sliding block D drives it up into the pocket in draw-head, allowing the pin C to drop into the coupling-link I).
f is a cover over the pocket in draw-head to 1 keep out the dust, rain, d c.
'lhe lifting up of pin (1 for uncoupling may be done by hand from the side of car, or can be arranged by suitable mechanism with wire ropes to be lifted out from either side or top of ear.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupling, the combination of a draw-head having a vertically inclined guide in rear of the vertical pin-aperture thereof, an endwise-movable block fitted in said guide to slide freely therein, a coupling-pin, and a pivoted dog or catch arranged between said block and coupling-pin and having one of its ends arranged in the path of the block to be tripped by the same, substantially as and for the purpose (IGSOI'IDOG.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of a draw-head having a vertically-inclined guide in rear of the vertical pin-aperture thereof, an endwise-movable gravity-block fitted in said guide and having a longitudinal groove, a coupling-pin, and a pivoted dog or catch having its heel fitted in the groove of said gravity block, substantially as described.
THUS. W. PA'IERSON.
