VILLIAM TRABUE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO WV. YV. BARNES AND GUY O. SIBLEY, BOTHOF SAME PLACE.
SAW-SETTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,35*?, dated February 19, 1889.
Application iiled November 12, 1888. Serial No. 290,601. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known` that I, WILLIAM TRABUE, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jeiferson and State of Kentucky', have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Automatic Saw- Sets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the Io art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gu res of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specitication.
Figure l of the drawings is a representa`V tion of a perspective view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Figs. 3, '4, and 5 are details of the construction.
This invention relates to improvements in 2o automatic saw-sets; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A des- 2 5 ignates the side plate having the bearings B in its transverse upper portion for the journals of the roller C, which has the annular cam-groove u therein. The said groove uv has the opposite straight portions and the opposite cam or V shaped portions b, which are designed to throw the set-disk to the right and left, as hereinafter explained, when the said roller is revolved by means of a crank on the outer end of the extended journal c.
3 5 D is a guide-plate, between which and the inner face of t-he side plate, A, the saw-blade is designed to slide. The plate D has a t-hreaded bolt, d, standing at right angles thereto and passing through an opening in the side plate,
4o where it is engaged by a thumb-nut, E, having an annular flange, e, on its inner end engaging in the groove f, formed in the bracket F on the side plat-e, which prevents longitudinal movement of the nut, so that the nut turning on the screw will adjust the plate D to the thickness of the saw-blade.
G is a slide or bar, which is preferablygraduated, seated and moving in-a groove in the bed-plate H, which projects laterally from the 5o lower edge of the plate D, and l is a collar or yoke secured at any desired point on the bar G by means of the thumb-screw g, and having a rearward extension-piece, J, bearing closely against the edge of the bar G. A dog or pawl, K, is pivoted to the lug L, upstanding and in- 5 5 tegral with the bar G, designed to engage successively the teeth of the saw and move the instrument alongv the blade one tooth at time. A spring, 71, secured at one end to the lug L, holds the pawl in engagement with the 6o smv-tooth M is a lever pivoted on the barN, and having at its upper end the ringj, provided with the eccentric portion. lr., surroumling the journal c, which has the diametrically-opposite project-ions or lugs Z, designed at every halfrevolution of the journal to strike the eccentric 7s and throw the lower end of the lever forward, so that the pin M thereon will strike against the end of the extension J and carry 7o the setting-instrument along the saw by the engagement of the pawl of the slide with a tooth of the saw-blade, said blade being held in a vise. The coiled spring fn., secured at one end to the bar G, and at its opposite end to the bed-plate ll, returns the parts to their normal position when a lug t shall have passed the eccentric.
The collar I is adjustable on the bar G, an d is designed to be set by the grad nation-marks 8o thereon to suit the length of the tooth of the saw on which the instrument is being operated. The slide-bar G and its pawlare moved vby the collar according to the adjustment of the latter, and the collar is operated by the stroke of the lever M against the extension or portion K, whereby the stroke of the pawl is governed. After the stroke the slide-bar, op` erated by its spring, returns to position.
N designates a thrower-plate pivoted on 9o the pin o, projecting from the side plate, A, and having a lug, p, at its upper end projecting into the cam-groove a of the roller O, so that when the roller is operated the plate N is reciprocated to carry the set-disk Oi, which is also journaled on the pin q, and secured to the plate N by means of the coupling-pin r, projected through an opening in said plate, and any one of the series of openingssin the disk that may be required to bring any one Ioo of the lseries of set-notches t in the periphery of the disk to operate upon the saw-teeth. The said notches t are of different widths and properly numbered, so that the saw-teeth may be set at the required angle.
It is evident that the revolving of the roller C will impart a vibra-tory motion to the setdisk, so that one side of the notch in engagement with the saw-teeth will set the tooth in one direction, and the next tooth will be oppositely set when the opposite side of the notch cornes in contact therewith, the blade being moved forward, as heretofore explained.
A height-guide, R, is provided with a slotopening, yn, to engage on the threaded bolt t', extending from the bed-plate, so that it may be moved up or down to bring its inwardlyturned flange w to the height required to regulate the passage ot' the instrument over the saw-teeth, it beingheld as adjusted by the thumb-nut The height-guide flange moves on the tops of the teeth as the instrument is fed along the blade and regulates the height oli'k the instrument with reference to the notch of the thrower-plate.,
AHaving described my invention, what l claim is l. In a saw-set, the combination, with the crank, the cani on its shaft, and the pivoted notched thrower-plate t'or setting the teeth, of the intermittently-operating lever, the feedpawl, and the adjustable devices regulating its stroke, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the side plate having the bearings, o'i the roller having the cam-groove, the pivoted plate N, having it-s end extended into said cam-groove, the pivoted` set-disk, and the operating-crank, substantially as specified.
The combination of the side plate, A, having the bearings, the roller journaled in said bearings and having the annular calngroove, the crank, the pivoted plate having* the lug extend ed into the cam-groove, the pivoted set-disk secured to said plate, and the guide-plate D, having the bolt extended through an opening in the side plate, substantially as specified.
al.. The combination, with the side plate, A, having the transverse bearing portion, the pivoted plate N, and the set-disk, of the roller having the cam-groove, thelugs on its extended journal, the pivoted lever M, having the eccentric within its ring end and the pin on its opposite end, and the graduated bar and the pawl pivoted thereon, substantially as specified.
In combination with the bearing-plate A, the cam-groove roller, the pivoted plate engaging the pivoted set-disk, and the pivoted lever M, the graduated bar seated in the grooved lateral bed-plate, the springcontrolled pawl pivoted to the bar, the yokehaving the extension, the thumb-screw, andI the returning spring, substantially as spe'oiied..
G. In a saw-set, the combination, with the slide-bar, the intermittinglyiacting lever, and the operating mechanism, of the height-guide having the slot-opening and the inwardlyproj ect-ing` portion, and the fastening-screw, substantially as specified.
7. In a saw-set, the combination, withl a notched oscillating throwerplate for setting' the teeth, the adjustable height-guide, as'lidebar carrying a 'feeding-pawl, and an intermittently-acting stroke-lever, of a shaft having a turning-crank, and carrying devices to operate said thrower-plate and lever, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
