SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,295, dated February 15?, 1889.

Be it known that I, FRANCIS NVAYLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at laukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Device for Controlling Checkreins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for harness, and has for its object` to providej means whereby the checkrein used for keeping= the horses head erect may be attached to and released from a fixed portion of the har ness-such as the saddle-at will by the occupant of the vehicle without leaving the seat.
The further objects of my invention are to secure a simple, cheap,- durable, and effective construction of the device to perform the above-mentioned function.
The novel features of my invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims, being first fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I represents the manner of lusing my improved device. A may represent the harness, saddle, or any other fixed portion, to which is attached the 'socket-plate B.
D is a strap fitting the socket in the plate, which strap is attached to the check C forward and to the driving-rein E in the rear, and has a spring,.8, for projecting it.
The socket-plate has socket l, in which fits the strap D' and lateral guide-channels 2 to allow the passage of pin or projection 7, secured transversely in the strap. This strap is embraced at each end of the plate, and thereby kept from transverse movement in any direction. The socket has enlargement or hollow 3, over which are mounted the cams -t of peculiar shape. The socket is prefern ably formed to fit the strap at each end, the intermediate portion being' enlarged to the width sufficient to allow the transverse pin free movement in at least one direction. The cams l are preferably carried by flanges 4A,
E which are screwed down upon the corresponding flanges, 5, of the plate. 'The plate may,
however, be formed in two parts, each part' l carrying a flange and secured together in any t preferred manner.
The cams l are mounted in a line with the l strap andhavetheir forward under faces, 4, l and their rear upper faces, le, beveled-that is, at an angle to the strap, the lowerfaces'havl ing notches e opening rearwardly. The forward ends are preferably on a line with the upper sides of the lateral channels 2, while the rear ends are on aline with the lower sides of the same. inasmuch as the strap fits the ends of the socket snugly, it will be seen that as it is drawn rearward the projection or i pin 7 will be engaged and guided by the unn der sides of the cams, and the stout strap, being bent, will quickly press and hold the pin 7 in engagement with the notches la, where it is drawn past them in opposition to the spring S. A further pull of the strap rearward will bring the rivet or pin against the faces ll just beyond the ends at@ of the cams. These ends being below the normal position of the pin, the strap will immediately lift the pin above said ends. The spring 8 is preferably spiral, surrounding strap D and confined between the bevel or square face 9 of the plate B and the snap-hook 10,701l other head on the end of the strap. This spring is of sufficient length and strength to hold the pin tightly in engagement with the notches 4a, which are preferably hollowed out to permit the pin to seat itself therein. The spring may be made in two portions, though it is preferably cast in one, having the cams ap plied subsequently, as explained. The socket could also be made to assume a different position, such as in a plane at right angles to that in which it is shown to occupy.
In practice my device will be constructed will also project the strap forward when the IOC) and used with the projecting spring 8 or its equivalent; but it is obvious that the device may be used and will be operated without said spring. Especially is this so if the strap be made to fit neatly in the socket, when the friction will act to prevent the too free move ment of the strap in the socket. I therefore desire it to be understood that I do not limit myseli` to the use of the spring.
Having thus described my invention, the following is whatI claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1.v In a check-controlling device, the combination of a strap, D, for controlling the check, a fixed plate, B, having a socket which embraces the strap t-o guide it, anotched cam onv the plate, and a projection on the strap which engages the cam and is deiiected in opposition to the elasticity of the strap and opposes the forward movement of the strap by engaging behind the notch in the cani when drawn. past it, substantially in the manner explai-ned.
2. In a check-controlling device, the combination of a strap, D, for controlling the check, a fixed plate, B, having a socket, i, the ends of which embracel the strap and prevent its movement transversely, a cavity, 3, where a portion of the strap has play transversely in at least one direction, and a cam located in the cavity of the socket, a projection or pin on the strap engaging the cam, whereby the projection and strap are deflected by the cam and the pin opposes forward movement by springing` up and engaging behind a notch, et, in the cam when drawn past it, and a spring for projecting the strap forward, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
3. In a check-controlling device, the combination of the strap D, connected to the check, a fixed plate, B, having a socket in which the strap' engages, and a spring, 8, op-
erating at one end on the strap, and having a fixed bearing for its other end, whereby it tends to project the strap forward, for the purposes explained.
1i. In a check-controlling device, the combination, with the saddle, of' a socket on the saddle, a strap working in the socket and having a rivet or pin and a projecting spring, and a cam, 4, having a notch, said cam being ylocated beneath the middle line of the' socket, -whcreby the strap is deiiected and its pin forced into engagement with the notch, as explained.
5. In a check-controlling device, the colnbination, with the saddle, of socketfplate B, having socket 1, side channels, 2, cams 4,- strap D, and a projecting spring, S, said cams being located in line with the strap and guides, and having beveled faces at an angle to the strap and guides, and the strap having projection 7 engaging the cams, whereby the strap depressed and then raised, for en gaging and releasing, as explained.
(i. In a cheek-controlling device, the combination of the strap D, connected to the cheek C, and having a projection, 7, a fixed plate, B, having a socket in which the projection 7 engages by a rearwardly-opening notch, and a spiral spring, 8, carried by the strap and coniined between the plate and check, whereby it tends to project the strap, and thereby keeps the strap in engagement in the socket, in the manner explained.
7. In a check-controlling device, the combination of the strap D for controlling the check, the plate B, having socket 1, cavity 3, and plates 6, carrying cams located in said cavity, a pin, 7, passing transversely through the strap and engaged by the cams, and aprojecting spring, substantially as herein set forth.
8. In a check-controlling device, the combination of the strap D, attached to the check, a fixed plate, B, having a socket in which the strap engages, and a beveled end, 9, and a spring, 8, carried and confined at one end on the st ap and seating at the other on theinclined end 9, said socket and strap having corresponding engaging notch and pin, whereby it gives an upward set to the check and affords an elastic tension on the animal s mouth,
in the manner explained.
9. The combination, with the saddle, of the plate B, having socket l, side channels, 2, hollow il, and plate U, carrying ca'ln 4 over said hollow, said cam lying out of line with the socket, and havin bcvelfaces 4" l@ and notch a, a strap, D, controlling check C,- and having apin, 7, guided by and engaging the cams l, and a projecting spring, S, all arranged substantially as set forth.
I0. In a check-controlling device, the coinbination of the socket-plate, a cheek-controlling strap working in the socket-plate, a pin or proj eci/ion on the strap, a two-sided cam in the socket adapted to guide the projection on one side when drawn in and on the opposite side when let out, said cam having an engagin gnotch on one side, and a projecting spring, arranged in the manner and for the purpose explained.
