BOLTlNG-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,937, dated February 19, 1889.
Application filed March 13 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL G. REITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Berlin, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belting-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in bolting-reels; and it consists, first, in a reel having a series of helical flutes arranged at a suitable distance within the screen and rotating therewith; and my invention further consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fullyset forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing. Figure l is an elevation of a bolting-reel embodying my improvements, parts of the screen and of the cant-boards being removed so as to disclose the interior construction of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the reel with the screen removed, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line i y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view of the head of. the reel, taken on the line .2 z of Fig. 2.
A represents a vertical rectangular frame or case, which is of the usual construction, is provided with the inclined cant-boards B, and has a pair of conveyer-troughs, 0, arranged side by side in its lower portion and extending longitudinally through the same, the central partition, I), of the said conveyer-trough being arranged directly under the center of the space between the lower edges of the cant-boards. The lower edges ot' the cantboards are connected at suitable regular distances by transverse cleats E, which are provided on opposite sides with projecting flanges I and are beveled or inclined in opposite direct-ions on their upper sides.
G represents a series of cut-ott' drawers or slides, which have their ends inclined at the same angle with the cant-boards, the lower sides of the said cut-ott' slides being open, and said cut-ott' slides being provided with grooves H in their sides, which grooves engage the flanges F of the cleats and thereby support the cut-off slides under the cant-boards and enable said slides to be moved transversely, i so as to cause them to discharge the material l serial No. 267,117. that falls between the cant-boards into either of the conveyer-troughs at will, as will be readily understood. The inclined ends of the cut-off slides are provided with suitableknobs or handles, I, by means of which the cut-off slides may be readily operated.
The conveyer-troughs are provided with hinged lids or covers K, and have suit-able discharge-openings in their lower sides, and in the said conveyer-troughs are arranged the usual worm conveyers, L, the shafts of which project beyond one end of the conveyertrough and are provided with sprocketwheels M.
N represents an impcrforziite body. which is cylindrical in shape, and has its outer sides formed by a series of helical flutes, O, which have the convex or curved tangential sidesP extending in the direction in which the bolt rotates, and have the concave shoulders R at the inner end, 5, of the said concave sides. The said helical flutes have their higher ends at the head of the reel and their lower ends at the discharge end oi the reel, as shown in Fig. 2.
At the discharge end of the reel is a circular projecting plate, S, which is provided with discharge openings, T, which communicate with the discharge end of the flutes, and surrounding the recl, at regular distances apart and at a suitable distance from the sides thereof, are a series of rings, U. The head of the reel is formed by a ring, V, the external diameter of which is equal to the external diameters of the rings l and said ring V is secured to the proximate end of the cylindrical portion of the reel by means of a series of curved arms, W, the said arms being arranged in the same curved lines with the flutes and communicating with the higher ends of the same, for the purpose to be hereinafter described.
The screen or bolting-cloth X, which is of silk, as is usual in this class of machines, is stretched over the rings S, V, and U, and is secured thereon in the usual manner, and is thus supported at a suit-able distance beyond the flutes. The reel is provided with acentral longitudinal sha t't, Y, which is journaled in suitable bearings at the ends of the case or. frame.
Z represents a stationary ring, which is arranged within the revolving ring V and has its outer edge beveled, as shown, to fit the corresponding bevel on the inner side of ring V. Said ring Z is connected to the inner side of the case or frame at one end of the latter, and is arranged directly opposite the head end of the cylindrical reel.
A represents the feed-hopper, which is secured on the end of the case or frame in which the head of the reel is arranged, the said hopper being adapted to feed the stock to the head of the reel, as shown.
To one end of the shat'tY is keyed a sprocket-wheel, B, which is of somewhatless diame ter than the sprocket-wheels M, and is connected thereto by means of an endless sprocket-chaiii, C. To the opposite end of the said shaft Y is secured a driving-pulley, D.
E represents a vertical dust-board or partition, which is arranged in the frame, and
has a central opening, through which the discharge end of the reel extends. The said dustboard or partition is made in separable sections F, whereby said dust-board or partition is adapted to be removed in order to permit access to be attained to the reel when the bolting-cloth is bein attached to or removed th eref ro 1n The operation of my invention is as follows: 0 The reel is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3 at the rate of about sixty revolutions a minute, and the stock is fed to the lower side of the screen at the head of the reel by the hopper hereinbefore de- 3 5 scribed. As the reel rotates, the stock is fed into the upper ends of the flutes by the curved arm \V, so as to prevent the head of the reel from becoming crowded with the stock, and that portion of the stock. which is i n, the lower 40 side of the screen will be carried by the upwardly-moving side olf the screen until it reaches about two-thirds the height of the scrcen,when the stock will fall from the screen by its own gravity into the flutes. As the flutes .5 containing the stock pass the upper dead-center of the reel, the stock isprojccted therefrom by centrifugal force against the inner sides of the screen, thereby forcing the Hour or liner particles through the screen, while the middlings or coarser particles will Fall to the l iotton ol. the screen and be again subjected to the operation just described. Owing to the helical direction of the Hates, the, tailings are gradually worked toward the discharge end of the reel, and are finally discharged therefrom through the openings T, as will be readily ululcrstood. As the stock moves downward on the inner side of the screen, it is tl1oroughl agitated by frictional contact with the screen, and this agitation of the stock also assists in the bolting process, the Il'lfilll or liner particles being thereby discharged continuously from both sidcsot the reel. ltwill be observed by reference to liig. 3 that the stock is in contact with all portions of the revolving screen excepting that portion of the screen which is directly over the shaft Y, and the stock is evenly distributed througlr out the inner side of the screen, so that the screen is exactly counterbalanced, and thus the screen is enabled to be driven with a minimum expenditure of power; and, moreover, the screen is caused to bolt throughout nearly its entire surface, thereby increasing the capacity of the bolting-reel to the maximum extent. Moreover, the comparatively slow rate of speed at which the reel is operated prevents the stock from being dashed against the screen or bolting-cloth with such force asto materially injure the same, and consequently the durability of the boltingcloth Very greatly enhanced.
The function of the dust-board or partition is to prevent the dust and dirt which is discharged from the reel with the tailings from enveloping the reel and becoming commingled with the material bolted. thereby, thus adapting the reel to produce the finest grade of flour.
Having thus described my invention, I claim a 1. The bolting-reel having the imperforate cylindrical portion, the sides of which are formed by a series of helical flutes, P, having the curved convex tangential sides P, extending in the direction in which the reel rotates, and having the concave shoulders R at the inner edges of said convex sides, the convex side of each flute merging into the concave side of the next adjacent flute throughout the series, the said imperforate cylindrical por tion being arranged in the center of the reel. at a distance from the bolting screen or cloth, substantially as described.
2. The bolting-reel having the impert'orate cylindrical portion, the sides of which are formed by a series of hellca-l flutes, P, having the curved convex tangential sides 1, extending in the dircctitm in which the reel rotates, and having the concave shtmlders R at the inner edges of said convex sides, the convex side of each time merging into the concave side of the next adjacent flute throughout the series, sul'istantially as specified.
$3. The reel having the impert'orate cylindrical portion arranged within the screen or bolti ng-cloth and provided on its sides with the helical flutes having the convex tangential sides P and the concave shoulders R, the ring V, arranged at a distance from the head of the cylimlrical portion of the reel and revolving therewith, and the curved arms XV, connccting said ring V with the head of the cylindrical portion of the reel, substantially as descril'ied.
