$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,747, dated February 12, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD H. OLIVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at ayland, county of Allegan, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Sleigh, of which the following is a specification.

The main object of this invention is to construct the beam and knees of sleighs all from a single piece of wood.

A further object consists in the peculiar association of said combined beam and knees with the runner and rave of a sleigh, all below described and claimed. 7

In. the drawings forming a part of this speeification,Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a rear elevation with parts in section on lines] 1 and 2 2 in Fig.1; and Fig. 3 is a plan of the beam and knees prepared ready for bending.

Referring to the letters marked on the drawings, A is the beam having the knee ends D and the short tongues a at each end. In Fig. 3 the knees D and tongues a are parallel with each other, this figure showing the shape of the beam and its integral knees prior to bending, as when sawed out of a strip of timber.

In preparing for use in a sleigh the knees areibowed downward and the tongue ends of the beam left straight, as in Fig. 2, and the knees are bent apart so as to diverge from each other and stand bracing, as in Fig. 1. The lower ends of the knees D are attached to the runners B. are here shown bent from a single strip of material, said strip being bent upward, forward, and thence rearward, forming the rave above the runner, with a bowed front end. The rave is attached to the free end of the tongue (.L of the beam, and from thence it extends in a curve downward, rearward, and

The runners B and raves B forward to the rear branch of the knee, to which it is attached. This rear curved end of the rave forms a brace, making the construction stronger than it would be if it were dispensed with; but, so far as the combined knees and beam are concerned, an ordinary runner and rave, which are made separate from each other, may be employed, if preferred.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. As an article of manufacture, the combined sleigh beams and knees, consisting of a horizontal piece provided with the end tongues and the downwardly-diverging and curved knee part-s, all integral with each other, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the combined beams and knees, consisting of the single piece provided with the integral end tongues and downwardly-divergingcurved knee parts, and the combined runners, raves, and rear brace end of the raves, all associated together, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the combined beams and knees, consisting of the single piece pro vided at the ends with the integral clownwardly-diverging and curved knee parts and the integral end tongues, and the runners and raves of a sleigh, the lower ends'of the knee parts being attached to the runners and the raves being attached to said end tongues, substantially as set forth In testimony of the foregoing I have here-.
