CHARLES HENRI BENOIT, OF SAN J OSFJ, CALIFORNIA.
SHUTTLE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 897,269, dated February 5, 1889.
Application filed September 16, 1887- Serial No. 249,879- (No model.)
To cZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES HENRI BE- NOIT, of San J os, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have in vented a new and Improved Sewing-Machine Shuttle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of a part of the head of a sewing-machine, showing the needle-bar, presser-bar, take-up, cloth-plate, (in section,) the shuttle, and the shuttle-carrier. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the shuttle, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the spring.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
The needle-bar A, presser-bar B, cloth-plate C, and shuttle-carrier D are of the usual construction.
The shuttle G is enlarged at f and f to receive a large bobbin and a large quantity of thread; and in order that the shuttle may pass readily through the loop I elevate the point f and form the lower part of the shuttle with a curve, f, of a comparativelyshort radius, reaching from the point to the bottom line of the shuttle. The curve f of the shuttle, at the upper part thereof, reaching from the point back, is of much larger radius than the curve f so that it is practicable to make the shuttle very large to hold a large quantity of thread, and yet it will enter and pass the loop readily, and, owing to the'elevation of the point f, the needle h may be set oneeighth of an inch higher than with the ordinary form of shuttle and take-up.
The tension-spring j is formed with the tongue j and slot to give tension to the being drawn back accidentally from the spring 1 Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
1. The tension-spring j, provided with the tongue 7" within the body of the spring, the hook Z, projecting from the rear of the spring and having its end bent downward and forward, and the tongue 7c, projecting from the rear end of the spring over the hook Z, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a recessed shuttle, of the spring j, provided with the tongue j within the body of the spring, the hook Z, projecting from the rear end of the spring and having its end bent downward and forward into the recess of the shuttle, and the tongue 7x3, projecting forward over the hook Z, substantially as herein shown and described.
CHARLES HENRI BEN OlT.
