EXERCISING MACHINE.

To all whom it may coucew:

-Be it known that I, JOHN A. KEMMLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Inprovcments in Excrcising Apparatus, of which the folh'iwing is a specification.

My nvention consists of inprove'nents in that class of exercising apparatus in which a yielding pad is sti-uck hy the fist and caused IO to recede to an eXtent dependent upon the force of the blow delivered upon it, the object of 1n v invention being to construct an exercising apparatus of this class ol' amore acceptable character than those which have been heretofore devised. The apparatus comprises the base A, to which, near the front end, is hinged a fraine conprising, in the present instance, opposite L-shaped bars c, of angle-iron, the bases of which are connected by a plate, Z), on which is inounted a representation of a human figure, preferal'ily clad in the costunie of the prizen'ing, this figure being firnly secured to the fraine, so that it cannot be dislod ged therefron. The bars a carry near their upper ends a transverse bar, (Z, to which is rigidly se- I cured arod ortube, B, which projects forward in advance of the bar d and carries at its front end a disk, f, to which is Secured a pad, D, the lat-ter occupying such a position that 40 it seeiningly rests against the chest of the figure inounted upon the irane. The force of a blow delivered on this pad, therei'ore, is transnitted through the rod or tube B directly to the'transverse bar (I and to the vert-ical bars a of the hinged fra1ne,no strain whatever being exerted upon the figure, which can thns be made in the form of a -leather or papier-nach shell, so as to be extremely light and portable.

To the front portion of the base-plate b of the hinged frane is connected one end of a cord or chain, g, which passes around a pulley, h, in the base A, and is connected at its inner end to the front end of a rod, 7?, contained in a tube, m let into a reccss in the under side of the base-board, the rcar end of this rod having a collar, 72, between which and the closed front end of the tube m is interposed a spiral spring, s, the tendeney of which, therefore, is to press the rod rearward and maintain the hinged franie carrying the figure constantly in an upright position. -When a blow is struck upon the pad D, however, the force of the spriigs will be partially overcome, and the hin ged f rame and the figure carred th ereby will beforced rearward to an extent depending' npon the force of the blow.

To insure the rctention of the hinged franc and the figure in the position to which they have been forced by reason of the blow upon the pad, a detent-arn, G, is hinged to the base A, this arin being in part segment-al and having teeth on its under side, and the toothed segnental portion of the arn passing through a slot in a plate, f, carried by a transverse bar, w, of the hinged fraine, so that when the frane and its figure are forced rearward the engageinent of the notched or toot-hed under edge of the detent-bar with the plate t will prevent the return of the fraine andits figure to the upright position under the influence of the spring s until said detent-bar has' been lifted, so as to free its toothed under edge froni engagenent with the plate t, the outer end of the detent-bar being provided with a handle, cc, to facilitate the lifting of the same.

' Although I prefer to coinbine the hinged franie with the draft-cord and spring beneath the base, as described and shown, ny invention is not necessarily limited to this co11- struction. For instance, the base may be provided with a seg-mental guide-arni, J, passin g through a transverse bar, K, on the hinged frane and surrounded by a coiled spring, J act-in g upon said transverse bar, as shown, for instance, in Fig. 3, to maintain the hinged frame in the vertical position and to restore it to that position after it has been moved. backward therefrom; or the vertical bars of IOO the 'iframe nay possess such inherent elastieity as to tend to assume and i-etain the up- 'ight position.

Having thus described my inventio n, I claim and desi-e to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The conbination of the base, a yielding f'ane thereon carrying a representation of a human figure, and a st'iking-pad connected to said f'aine, all substantiaiiy as specified.

3. 4,. The conbination of the base, the frame pivoted thereto and carrying a representation of a human figure, a draft coi'd 01' chain connected to the fi-ane and passing around a pulley on. the base, and a spring' aeting upon said draft eord or ehain, aii substantialiy as specified.

5. The combination of the base, the yield- 'ing f'ane thei'eon, a 'ep'esentation of a human figure ca'i'ied by said fi'ane, and a striking-pad oecupying a position upon the bi'east oI' said figure, but having a rigid connection with the franie, wheeby blows upon the pad a'e transnitted directly to the *frane without straining the material of which the figure is conposed, all. substantially as specified;
