UNITED STATES ATENT GFFICE.
S'IANDHOPE I. ALLEN, OF CROSSVILLE, ALABAMA.
PLOW-HAN DLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,524, dated January 22, 1889.
Application filed September 4, 1888. Serial No. 284,530- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANDHOPE I. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crossville, in the county of De Kalb and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a plow-beam provided with my improvements; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of the adjustable clamping-plates; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the adjustable handle-brace, and Fig. 5 a vertical section on the line as :r of Fig. 2.
The invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements upon that class of devices employed for adj ustably attaching the handles to a plow-beam, whereby the inclination of the handles with respect to the beam may be readily varied to suit the character of plowing or the inclination of the plow-point, &c., as will be fully hereinafter set forth.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction, that will be fully hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates a plow-beam of the ordinary or any approved construction. Olamped pivotally to the beam, upon opposite sides of the same, near its rear end, by means of a horizontal bolt, a, are two clamping-plates, B, the said bolt passing horizontally through the forward ends of the plates and through the beam and having tapped upon its end a suitable tightening-nut. These clamping-plates are constructed alike and have each formed in its inner or adjacent faces a rearwardly-inclined groove, 1), for the reception of the lower ends of the rearwardlyinclined plow-handles C, the handles being thus clamped between the walls of the groove and the opposite sides of the beam. Formed through the rear end of each plate B is a vertical row or series of horizontal bolt-holes, c. Passing through a coincident pair of these holes 0 in the plates B B and through a horizontal aperture in the plow-beam is a clamping-bolt, (I, provided with a nut, 61. By means of these pivoted handle-clamping plates provided with the series of apertures it will be observed that the inclination of the handles with respect to the beam may be readily varied and the handles securely held in any of their adjusted positions. If it is desired to pitch the handles forward, the clamping-bolt d is inserted in the lower holes of the series, and vice versa.
By means of the adjustable handle-brace D the handles may also be spread apart or brought closer together, as may be desired. The brace consists of a bar bifurcated or notched at its ends to embrace the handles, the ends of the arms formed by the bifurcations being provided with boltrholes for the passage of the clamping-bolts e. When it is desired to spread the handles apart, the bolts e are loosened and the brace pressed down between the handles until the desired adjustment is obtained, when the bolts are again tightened. In bringing the handles closer together the brace is moved up in the same manner. In spreading the handles the clamping-nut d is loosened, andwhen thebrace has been secured in its adjusted position the nut is tightened again.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a plow-beam, of handles adj ustably secured to the beam, and a vertically-adjustable brace, D, secured between the handles, the ends of this brace being bifurcated to embrace the handles and provided with securing-bolts, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a plow-beam and handles, of apair of clamping-plates pivotally bolted upon opposite sides of the said plowbeam, these plates being provided with grooves in their inner faces for the reception of the plow-handles, and each plate being also provided with a vertical series of apertures, a removable bolt, d, passed through the plowbeam and the apertures in the plates, an adj ustable brace, D, placed between the handles, the ends of this brace being bifurcated to embrace the handles, and clamping-bolts c 0, passed through the bifurcated ends of the said brace, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STANDHOPE I. ALLEN.
