SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,410, dated J' anuary 22, 1889.
Application filed January 5, 1886. Serial No. 187,737. (Model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, YILLIAM FRANCIS M C- KAY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing' in the city of Toronto, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Printing from Stencils; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, refer- 1o ence being had to the annexed drawings,
which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide means by which printing done from stencils such as are made by the electric pen and other I 5 processes-is greatly facilitated, at least three hundred copies being produced by aid of this invention in the same time one hundred can be produced by the methods now in use. I attain this object by means of the machine 2o illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved machine. Fig. 2 isaplan of the saine.

My invention operates as follows: The pa- 3 5 per is drawn from the under side of the continuous roll of paper C and passed between the stenciled sheet in the frame A and the bed-plate B. An inking roller or scraper charged with ink being now passed over the 4o stenciled sheet in the frame A, the ink passes through the perforations or stencil-cuttings in the stencil-sheet to the paperbeneath coming from the roll 0r web O, thus printing upon it. The paper is now drawn forward bythe right hand until that part of it printed upon passes the gages D D. The brass edge of an ordinary brass-inlaid paper cutter and ruler held in the left hand is then pressed against the gages D D and downward upon the paper, andthe section of the paper printed 5o upon is by an upward motion of the right hand torn or cut off. The springs F F, by the pressure of the paper cutter and ruler in the left hand are compressed, and the stenciled sheet consequently is brought close down upon the paper, and at this moment the inking-roller is again passed over the stenciled sheet by an assistant and another section of the paper is printed upon. The frame A, bearing the stencil being relieved from the press- 6o ure of the paper cutter and ruler in the left hand, is again thrown upward by the springs F F, and the paper being now clear of the stencil there is no liability to slur or rub, and
it is again drawn forward and the section printed upon detached, as before. This operation is repeated as rapidly as the right hand can pull and detach the sections printed upon untilthe desired number of copi es are had.
I do not confine myself to passin the paper from the continuous web under the stencil, as it may pass above the stencil, backed with coloring-matter, such as is used in the papyrograph and pantatypeprocesses. In that case my machine is placed in a press operated by screw or lever, and the impression there made by the platen or following plate, instead of being made by a printers roller.

The frame A, carrying stencil, having journaled roll C at one end, supported on springs F F at the other and provided with pins G G, in combination with a plate, B, arranged under the stencil, and a table, E, carrying gages D D, as shown and described.
