UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. GIBBON, OF ALBANY, NEIV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE METALLIC STREET RAILIVAY SUPPLY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STREET- RAILWAY TRACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,036, dated January 8, 1889.
Application filed October 13, 1888. Serial No. 287,997. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, THOMAS H. GIBBON, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improveinents in the Construction of Street- Railway Tracks, of which the following-is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements on the system of constructing railway-tracks for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 320,869 were granted to me June 23, 1885; and it consists in providing frogs and switches which are adapted to the requirements of my said system, as herein shown and described.
I5 In the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of my frog with portions of the track-rails and cross-ties attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged inverted plan view of the frog-plate. Fig. 4. is a plan view of my switch-plate. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical section at the line X X of Fi 3. Fig.
7 is an enlarged vertical section at the line Y Y of Fig. 3; and Fig. 8 is an enlarged end elevation of the right-hand end of Fig. 4.
As represented in the drawings, A is the frog-plate, which, with a slight modification 0 hereinafter explained, also serves as a base for the switch shown-in Figs. 4 and 5. Said frog-plate has at each end a box, 1, and at or near its middle a box, 2, pendent from its lower face, all of said boxes being preferably 3 5 made integral with the casting of the frogplate. Said frog-plate has on its upper face at each end angularlyarranged treads 3,
which range in line with the track-rails B,
which abut against said treads, so that the heads of the rails will form a nearly continuous and a substantially unbroken line of track, with said treads on either line of said track-rails. The boxes 1 are provided on their upper side with grooves r, for receivingalongitudinal tongue, 5, which is pendent from the lower side of the track-rails B, as set forth in the Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to. All of the boxes, both 1 and 2, are provided with oppositely-located T-shaped openings 6 in their side flanges, the Vertical arm of said openings being for the reception of the cross-ties 7 and the horizontal arm is for receiving a key, 8, which secures the trackrail 13 in place, as described in my former patent hereinbet'ore referred to.
In the modification shown in Fig. at and 5, the conjoining treads 3 form a point, 9, to which a tongue, 0, is pivoted, as at 10, to swing sidewise in either direction, said tongue being adapted to enter into either one of the recesses 11, which are formed oppositely to each other in the divergent treads 3, so that said tongue may be arranged to range in line with either of said divergent treads, as occasion may require.
I claim as my invention 1. A base-plate for street-railway frogs and switches, provided with angularlyarranged treads and having at its opposite ends pendent boxes extended therefrom, said boxes being adapted to receive the ends of track-rails whose heads coincide with said treads, as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. A base-plate for street-railway frogs and switches, provided with angularly-arranged treads and having pendent boxes formed thereon, the sides of said boxes being provided with oppositely-located openings for receiving cross-ties, and the keys by which said cross-ties are secured in place, as and for the purpose herein specified.
THOS. H. GIBBON.
'itnesses:
WM. H. Low, S. B. BREWER.
