Description
J. BRADY.
TAPE AND RIBBON DELIVERING DEVICE.
Patented Jdn. 8, 18.89
fnveigior UNITED STATES ATENT' FFICE.
JAMES BRADY, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO THE DUNN SAFETY TICKET AND REGISTER COMPANY, OF NEIY YORK, N. Y.
TAPE AND RIBBON DELIVERING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,948, dated January 8, 1889.
Application filed April 23, 1888. Serial No. 271,581. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES BRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Feeding or Delivering Tapes, Ribbons, and Continuous \Vebs or Strips of Paper or other Material, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for feeding and deliverin tapes, ribbons, and continuous webs or strips of paper, fabric, or other material; and the purpose thereof is to provide means whereby the delivery of the web or strip maybe retarded, so as to prevent the uncoiling of the same by its natural elasticity or by the momentum of the roll created by a sudden pull or jerk upon the tape or web. It is my purpose, also, to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive device for supporting a cylindrical roll of material of any kind in such manner that the continuous strip, web, or tape may be taken therefrom without disturbing, uncoiling, or loosening that portion remaining upon the roll, while the portion unwound shall be delivered from the periphery of the roll at the same point without regard to the decrease in diameter of the latter caused by the removal of the strip or web, thereby adapting the device to use in. connection with various classes of mechanism in which a continuous strip or web is operated upon for any purpose.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction and new combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying.drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section taken between the parallel brackets of the frame. Fi 2 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings the reference-mimeral 1 denotes a supporting bracket or frame composed of two parallel arms orstandards, which may be either vertical or inclined. In each arm is formed a longitudinal slot, 2, extending from the upper extremity to a point near the bottom.
The numeral 3 denotes what may be termed a riding roll, the same consisting of a cylinder, of any material and of any suitable diameter, mounted upon an axis, 4, the ends of which project sufiicientl y to rest in the slots 2 at the bottom thereof and turn freely therein.
The numeral 5 denotes the roll of tape, ribbon, paper, or other material, which is also provided with an axis or shaft, G,having projecting ends which lie in the slots 2, the periphery of the strip-roll 5 resting upon the riding roll 3. Upon the upper part of the strip-roll rests a roll, 7, having the projecting journals of its shaft 8 lying in like manner in the slots 2 of the standards 1. This upper roll may, if desired, be formed of such material as to give it proper weight and enable it to press upon the strip-roll with a suitable degree of force.
The strip wound upon the roll 5 is taken from the under side thereof and drawn'from between said roll and the riding roll 3. As it is drawn off, all three rolls rotate in unison, and the instant the tension upon the strip ceases the revolution of the strip-roll above and that below acts as a brake upon the momentum of the intermediate roll. The free end of the tape or strip is at all times held between the riding roll and the strip-roll, and the web or strip is delivered at a point which is constantly the same, without regard to the decrease in diameter of the roll by the removal of the contents. In feeding paper to presses in certain classes of web-printing, as well as in supplying the continuous strip for the wrapper of machine made cigarettes, this point is of material importance.
I may dispense with the upper or weight roll, '7, and operate the strip-roll in conjunction with the riding roll only.
It is evident that I may support the striproll in any manner whereby its periphery shall be brought by gravity into contact with the riding roll, and thereby, also, the axis of the strip-roll may be allowed to approach the axis of the riding roll as the strip or ribbon is withdrawn from the former.
IVhat I claim is- 1. In an apparatus for feeding or delivering tapes, ribbons, or other continuous strips wound in rolls, the combination, with a supporting-frame having parallel slots, of a striproll having its journals in said slots and a riding roll upon which said strip-roll rests, the free end of the strip being taken or drawn 'lfroni llOLWOPll Sflltl rolls, substantially as (10- scribed 2.
