CIRCULAR-KNITTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,927, dated January 8, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT IV. SCOTT and LoUIs N. D. WILLIAMs, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Circular-Knittin g Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists of a certain improvement in the construction of the dials of ribkuitting machines, the main object of our invention being to remove all side strain or twist from the needles of the dial, so that they can be. operated at a much higher rate of speed than usual; and a further object is to obviate the necessity of lubricating the needles, thus preventing the soiling of the fine work. \Ve attain these objects in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a knittingmachine dial constructed in accordance with our invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are views illustrating one of the features of our invention. Fig. a is a perspective view of the supplementary jack, and Figs. 5 and (i are views illustrating modified forms of our invention.
In Fig. 1, A represents the ordinary circular dial of a rib-knitting machine, having 011 its upper face and around the outer edge radial guides a for the needles :0. Instead of n-ovidingfor the projection and retraction of these needles by the direct action of the cams on the dial-plate l above the dial, however, we inter-pose between the dial and dialplate a supplementary guiding-dial, A, having in its upper face radial grooves a for the reception of radially-sliding jacks 5r, each of which has a projecting bit, 0, for engagement with the cams d of the dial-plate I and a depending arm, 1?, preferably expanded a t the lower end for adaptation to one of the radial guides (l of the dial and having a recess for the reception of the bit 1 of the needle. These jacks thus serve to transmit the radial movements to the needles 00 of the dial, but prevent the transmission of any side motion as to be amply strong enough to withstand it.

In Fig. 5 we have shown the jack w as an extension of the needle-shank, being bent into form and guided by the supplementary dial.
In Fig. 6 the bit of the needle is elongated and extends up through the supplementary dial and engages with the cam, the supplementary dial tending to steady the needle. We are therefore enabled by the above-described arrangement to run the machine at a much higher rate of speed than one constructed in the ordinary manner, and we find that the lubricating of the needles 00 to facilitate their radial movement is unnecessary; hence the soiling of fine work, which is an objection to the present machines, is effectually overcome.
In order to facilitate and cheapen the manufacture of the supplementary dial A, we form on the top of the same around the outer edge a rim, f, and beneath the same an annular recess, g, the rim f being afterward grooved radially for the reception of the jacks 5c, the ribs between the grooves bridging the recess, which latter thus serves for the play of the depending arms (I of the jacks without the necessity of cutting slots in the dial' for the reception of said arms.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. The combination of the dial and its needles with a supplementary guiding-dial and a cam for actuating said needles, substantially as set forth.
