UNITED TATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS OALLAIIAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE CORNELIUS CALLAI'IAN COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 395,877', dated January 8, 1889.
Application tiled February Z8, 1888. Serial No. 265,560. (No model.)
To all whom it 77mg/ concern:
Be it known that l, CoRNELiUs CALLAHAN, a citizen ot' the United States, residing' at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented eertain new and useful. Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of which the :following is a elear, t'ull, and exact description, reference being' had to the aecompanying drawings, making' a part o't' this specification, in whiehl `irure l. represents 'a sectional view of a e()upling'seetion with my improvement atiaehed. Fig: 2 represents a suitable tool for the removal ot' my clamping-ring.
My presenti invention consists in combining with a section of hose-coup]ing` an interior clampiugr-ring sere\v-tlu'ea1led on its vertical sides, and which, when in position in the hose, shall extend slightly above the upper surface of the eoupling'a'ing', as shown in the drawine's. Y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to deserihe the exact manner in which I have earried it out.
In thedrawinn's, A represents the outer ring' ot' a coupling' ot' the ordinary and well-known construction.
B represents the base, and C the clamping'- ring. The parallel straight portions ot' the clamping-ring' (l are screw-threaded, as shown, for a purpose hereinafter explained. This rin is forced into the end ot' the hose and within the elampingringl only a portion of its length. It has heretofore been forced in its entire length, and consequently, when it became necessary from any Cause to detach the couplingt'rom the hose, this clamping-ring` was always exceedingly diiiieult of removal The essential purpose of my present invention is to overcome this difficulty and render the clamping-ringel easily and quiekly removed, and thereby readily releasing' the Coupling` from the hose.
By my construction of the elainping-ringit is evident that by a screw-wrench such as is shown in Fig'. 2 the ringl can be quicklywithdrawn and the couplingl easily removed from the hose.
Havingl thus deseribed my invention, what I elaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In Combination with a hose-coupling, the clam ping-ring (l, havin g parallel smooth sides for a portion ol' its length, and having' the remai ning portion threaded and adapted to projeotbeyond the end of the coupling for the reception ot' a suitable tool, said ring-havingl its inner end beveled or tapered, thereby adaptingA it to be foreed into the end of the hose and to be held by frictional Contact between the clamping-ring` Aand couplinmseetion, substantially as deseribed.
CORNELIUS CALLAHAN.
