Description

NTTnD STATES PATENT GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,827, dated January 8, 1889. Application filed October 18, 1888. Serial No. 288,417. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM S. HARRIS, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Hy invention relates to sliding gates of that class operated by levers actuated by persons passing' the gateway; yand the invention has for its object to provide simple, inexpensive, and positively-acting devices by which the gate may be slid open or shut easily and without derangeinent of the levers, pull-cords, and drum.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the gate-operatin g devices, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure .l is a perspective view of a gate embodying my improvements, 011e pair of the operating-levers being partly broken away. Fig. 2 isa detail perspective viewof the gateoperating drum, with its shaft and sprocketwheel connections and portions of the gateoperating cords; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cord-guide at the main gate-post.
The gate proper, A, shown is formed of uprights, rails, and braces; but it may have any ordinary or approved construction. It is fitted to slide between two nprights, h b, constituting, with a cap-piece, the main gate-post B, and is adapted to close to the latch-post C and to open to or toward a post, D, of the adjacent fence-panel. The gate is provided at its inner end with a couple of anti-friction rollers, c. a, which travel upon a guide rail or rod, E, fixed to the posts B D, and a couple of anti-friction rollers, a c', are provided on the post B for the top rail of the gate to move between, while the lower gate-rail has support at all times on a roller, c2, journaled to and between the lower ends of the uprights I; b of the post B, and when the gate is closed across the roadway F its bottom rail rests on a roller, a3, journaled to a block of wood or stone set about at the center ofthe roadway and out of the path of wheels of vehicles passing the gateway.
levers, J K, extending along the gateway at and from each side of the post, and each lever is provided at its outer end with a pull chain or cord, k, by which it may be drawn upon by a person on a vehicle or on horseback traveling along the roadway to open and close the gate, as hereinafter explained. A guard-plate, M, having a flange, m, by which it is attached by screws or bolts to the post B, is provided under each sprocket-wheel H, to prevent disengagement of the chain belt therefrom.
I employ two gate-operating cords, N O, the former being connected at one end to the drinn G by passing itthrough a hole, n, at the drum-ange and kn otting it outside the drum, and after being turned a few times around the drum this cord N is connected to an eye or loop on a stirrup iron or shackle, n', at the back end of the gate. The cord O is connected at one end in like manner at 0 to the drum, and after being' wound upon the drum a Vtew times in the reverse direction to the cord N it is connected at its outer end to one Jarm of an elbow-lever, P, which is fulcrumed Vat the top of the outer end of the gate, and is connected bya link or rod, p, with the elastic latch R, which is held at its inner end to one ofthe gate-rails, and at its outer end has a hook-shaped head, o, which is adapted to engage or latch automatically behind a pin, S, xed in the post C, as the gate closes.
A V or U shaped wire or metal rod, T, is arranged horizontally in the slot of post B between the gate and drum and contiguous to t-he latter-that is to say, its body or looped portion t is thus arranged, and is secured in such position by fastening its laterally-bent ends 1f to the post.
The function of the device is to prevent the cords from slipping off the drum when pulled by design or accident.
It is obvious that a person approaching the IOO closed gate from eitller side of; il inflfyby pnll.- y
