To all 1071 0721, it may cancer/1 .Be it known that l, l I'ENRY ll. llYLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of 5 Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. usefu1 Improvements in lnj eetors for Burning Petroleum in Furnaees; and l elare the following to be a full, clear, and exaet description of? the invention, sneh as will enable others skilled in. the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to 1.:eehanism and apparatus t'or vaporizing and spraying hydrocarbon oils to be used as fuel in metallurgieal operath'ms, and partienlarly for use in a furnaee for welding pipe.
The nature of the invention consists of eonstruetions and eombinations, all as hereinatter deseribed in the speeilieation and pointed out in. the claims, ret'erenee being had to the aeeoin mirving drawings, in whichhignre l represmlts a side elevation of a t'urnaoe, a seelion ol' the oil-lwater, and an 2, a transverse (.5l(\'tl'.lt)ll ol? the oil-tank; Fig. seetion ol the t'urnaeeon line 2 ing one manner of ap 'ilying iny deviee; Fig. .l, a side elevation of the injeetor; front view of the injector with the easting that forms the mixing-ehamber removed; Fig. 5, a longitudinal seetion. of the injeetor; Fig.
6, an end view of the easting having partitions to divide the mixEng-chamber eral parts or passages; Fig. 7, a longit udinal section of the injector, showing parts sepa- 3 5 rated from each other and the asting having partitions removed; Fig. 8, a side elevation of the casting having partitions; Fig. .l, a longitudinal seetion ot' the strainer; and Fig. it], a top plan of the strainer, the (-211) being re- 40 moved to show the oil-ehamber.
A represents a furnace, whieh may be ol any desired form; ll, an oil-heat er; t, a tank, and D an injeetor.
The furnace represented is the kind ordinarilyused for welding pipe. lt is,however, provided with additional features, \vhieh will now be deseribed.
A isa perloral ed bridge or areh of any desired form and hieati-ul in the fire-box. It is shown supported by the gratebars; but the 2, Fig. 1, showdo hereby deinto sev- I lat ter may be removed and the arch supported in any other manner.
In the front wall of the turnaee are opening's A" for the injeettn' l), and in the ashpit lbetween. the tire-box is a blast pipe, 1 lo sup ilying air. I i A" is a steam-pipe leadlng lrom a suitable geneiator and having a braneh, A", leading into the 'l'urnaee. 'lhis braneh is mnneeted l with a series of pipes-A, loeated between the 5 bridge and the front wall. ol the l'uirnaee, and l whieh are preferably arrangiul as shown in dotted lines, .l ig. i. From these pipes a sn- 1 perheat ed-slea1n pipe, A leads to the injeelor l), and eonneeted to the latter in a manner thatwill hereinafter be deseribed. The pipe A is extended to an oil-heater, l arranged at any suitable point and eonneeted at one end ot' a steam-(soil, ll, inelosed by the drum 3' "lheother end ol" the eoil extends outside ,ol' the drum li and is provided with a p teoek, (I, whieh, when open, allows the waIere." l eondensalion to eseape from the eoil, and also allows the steam to have a tree (-ireuhition l through the eoil it it be desired to raise the l temperature in the heater 1 l The drum B is provided with a thermostat, i 7), a sight-glass, In, an oil-exit pipe, l-lv, whieh l l l I leads to the injeetor l), and an oil-supply pipe, ll", leading to the tank and having a S strainer, I), 'ilaeed at, any suitable point. This strainer eonsistsot' a eoupling somewhat similar in term to a globe-valve, instead, however, of a valve-seat, that part of the deviee is .rabbeted to reeeive a filter, 1)", ol any suitable material, wire-gauzebeing the material shown. It is seeured in plaee hy the ring I), \vhieh is serewed onto the vertieal t'aee oi the. rabhet. Above this ring a eln-nnber, ll, is formed and eonm ets with the inhtpipe b The upper part of the chamber is elosed by a sermvwap, I), whieh ean be removed when aeeess to the ehamber be desired to elean the :t'aee of or remove the tiller from the eonp ling. 5 All the injeetors are eonneeted to the oll- P pe ll b \'vertioal pipes l3 and to the steamsnperheater pipe A' by vertical pipes A In eaeh injector the pipe 'B"leadst0 an oil-ehamher, (7, formed of a (nip-shaped casting, d, and I having a nozzle, d screwed into the front end and having a flange, d, overlapping the easting' d The interior of the nozzle (Z is bellshapecl to receive a valve, (P, which is moved.
in and out ot the same by a screw-threaded stem, d extending through a scrmr-threaded gland, 11", secured in place in casting (I by serew 1/ and provided with a packing between its end and the lips r! on the casting d. A series ol' openings, (7, radiate through the walls of the nozzle and are (.OYtl'Ctl by nipples d, screwed into an enlargement of the holes (1" and project ing at. right angles to the length of said nozzles and on a. line with nipples screwed into the flange d", which forms the l'ront end of the annular steamchamln-r il. 'lhis chamber is formed in an am1ulns,l), in \vhieh the casting-d is seated, and is provided with a steam-sup 'tly port, it", and a screw-t hreaded flange, (1, enci reling the flange d, the nipples in which register with the steam-ehaml)er d and are held in place by the eonoidal casting I), screwed into the flange (1 ol' the casting l), which has packing, tl", between it and the tlange d. lletween the annulus l)and the eastingd isan annular air-passage, d, leading to a series of 'lliese ports 5 l annular stm'nn-ehainher, a casting having an ports, 17', formed in casting d. d open into an annular chamber, d', l'ormed in the IlUZZlUII HIHl havingexit-portsd ",leading into the mixing-ehamber l), l'ormed bvtho casting l)'- at a point between the nipples il 1/, so that the blastol' steam passing through nipples 1/ will draw a current of. air intothe miXing-ehamber I). 'lhis mixing-ehamber is divided into the same number ol' compartments as there are nipples d in the device by a casting, l), which consists of a nozzle, (1' having partitions 1/ which extend rearwardly beyond the nozzle to any desired distanee. 'lhepassages d l'ormed by these partitions r /'-,are provided with an exit-opening, at the Forward end.
The eastingl is seeured in place b a bolt, (T that is screwed into the head of nozzle To the trout end of casting is secured a, casting, l), of the same shape but. slightly larger than that part ot' the casting l) to which it is attached to form a steam-chamber, having an exit-opening, d, at its front end and at a-point where it eommingles with the vapor passing tln-imgh the (awnings r1. '.lhise.hamln .r is supplied with steam by a pipe, A", leading from the vertical pipe A.
The operatirm of this device is as Follows: Oil and steam are respectively admitted to chambers 17 and d and the. valve (1 set to allow the desired amount of oil to escape through the nipples d", at the. lips ol' which it is impacted upon. by the blasts of steam passing through the nipples d, which also draws in snllioient air through the air-ports (1 to make the proper mixture in the mixing chamber or passages formed by the easting I). As it escapes through the openings (1, it is impacted upon bya current of steam passi 11;; through the exit0peni1'1gs in the chamber (7 This mixture of oil, steam, and air is passed into the furnace and projected against the perforated arch or bridge A and burned. To assist in the proper: combustion oi the mixture, a blast of air is supplied thrtnigh pipe A", which air comming'les with the irivtnre as it breaks up at the arch or bridge and forces it up to the crown of the furnace and then down upon the hearth in the tape-cliamber. also snperheats the steam passing through the pipes A, which lead to the i.n; 'e i'tor.
The oil isheal ed to the proper temperature by the steam-pipe in the drum bet'ore it is fed to the injector, and by taking theoil from the lower part of the drum there is no danger of residual oil remaining in thedrum to clogup the machine.
