IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-OIL LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,55 l, dated August 18, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COOPER E. OORBETT, of Oorbettsville, Broome county, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Goal-Oil Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure lis an exterior view of the lamp; Fig. 2, a view of the top end of the tubes and wick, and Fig. 3 a section of the tubes and Wick.
T T is au outer tube inolosing packing a a, o."cotton or other porous substance, which surrounds the inner tube. The inner tube, fllled with the ordinary Wick W, is constructed as uslal. The outer tube, T T, is provided with lips L L, which are bent over the top of the packing, leaving openings as at P P P P for the flame. These openings may be varied according to the amount of ame or light required. The outer tube may be made of a single piece ot' sheet metal cut out the proper shape.
The object of surrounding the ordinary tule and Wick with packing of cotton or other porous substanceis to absorb the surplus oil that usually overflows the wick-tube and causes the disagreeable smoking which takes place when a chimneyis not used. By this arrangement the coal-oil lamp may be used Without a chimney, and will be very useful as a handlamp for the house, and suitable for railroad or other lanterns.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Surrounding the tube of the ordinary coaloil lamp with packing of cotton or other porous substance, as and for the purposes described.
