0. A. ESSIG.
OLEVIS.
No. 395,386. Patented Jan. 1, 1889.
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT O EEICE.
OZIA A. ESSIG, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE UNIVERSAL PLOIV COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,386, dated January 1, 1889.
Application filed November 2, 1887. Renewed June 28,1888. Serial No. 278,463. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ()ZIA A. EssIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-(Ilevises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the ani'iexed drz'iwings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which-- Figure 1 is an isometrical view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the draft-bar and a portion of the plow-beam. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the drop catch or look. Fig. 4 is an end View of the bottom of the drop catch or lock.
The present invention has relation to plowclevises designed and calculated for one-horse plows; and it con 7 s in the different parts and coml'iination of parts hereinafter de scribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a portion of the plow-beam, to the front or forward end of which is attached the crown-head B. Said crown-head is securely attached to the beam A by means of the clamping-bolt a. The draft link or bar I) is pivotally attached to the beam A by means of the bolt 1), substantially as shown in the drawings.
The front end of the crown-head ll is the segment of a circle of any desired diameter. This crown-head is provided with the cogs or teeth 0, which are for the purpose of engagingand holding the n'ojection (Z, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The drop-catch is provided with the pin C, which enters the aperture 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Said pin is somewhat smaller in diameter than the diameter of the aperture 2, so as to permit of easily adjusting or moving the drop-catch up or down. For
the purpose of securely holding the drop-catch at any desired point within the limits of the crown-head B, the recess f is provided, which engages the bar D, as illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of preventing the drop-catch from falling below the teeth 0, the shoulders g are provided, which rest upon the upper sides of the teeth 0. To provide a means for operating the drop-catch, the side flanges, h, are provided, which serve as handles.
hen in use and it is desired to change the horizontal angle of draft, the drop-catch is moved upward until the projection d is disengaged from the cogs 0, when the draft link or bar is free to be adjusted to any desired point and again securely locked by dropping the catch. To prevent the draft link or bar from passing beyond the ends of the crownhead, the projections 71" are provided, which strike against the projection cl.
It will be seen that by my peculiar arrangement the horizontal angle of draft can be changed so as to permit the horse to travel in the furrow.
For the purpose of adjusting the depth at which the plow should run, the whiffletreeclevis is attached to the desired aperture in the bar D.
Having full y described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with th e beam A, provided with the crown-head B, of the draft link or bar D, pivotally attached to the beam A, the drop catch or lock provided with the pin 0, projection (Z, shoulders g, side flanges, 7L, and recess f, the teeth a, and bar 1), substai'itially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
OZIA A. ESSIG.
IVitnesses: HARRY FREASE, FRED W. Bonn.
