THILL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,229, dated December 25, 1888.
Application tiled October 15,1888. Serial No. 288,134. (No model.)
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY O. HARRISON, of Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lhill-Couplings; and I do hereby decla-re the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in thin-couplings; and it consists of the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved thill-coupling which shall combine simplicity and durability of construction, can be easily and quickly adjusted to attach or remove the thill-irons, and which will support thevthill-iron in place and relieve the operator of the labor of holding` the same while the nutis being tightened to lirmlyconneet and secure the several parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of a thill-coupling embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sec- Fig, 3 is a perspective view of the several parts of my improved thill-coupling separated from one another, and Fig. et is a detail sectional view of a modification.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates the ordinary U shaped clip, which has its lower ends threaded to receive nuts a, that bear against a horizontal clip-plate, A', and thereby secure the clip very firmly in place on an axle.
B is a horizontal plate, which is made integral with one of the arms of the clip, and is arranged at right angles thereto.
C D designate the draw-irons, which are arranged parallel with one another and at opposite ends of the rigid plate B. One ot these draw-irons, C, is made integral with the plate B, and the other, D, is detachably secured to said plate B. This detachable drawiron bears against the vertical exposed end of the horizontal plate, and through an opening, d, in said draw-iron is passed athreaded pin or bolt, E. This bolt E may be made solid with the rigid plate B, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, or it maybe separated therefrom, as shown in Fig. a and in dotted lines in Fig. l. Then the bolt is made removable, l pass it transversely through a suitable aperture in the draw-iron O and plate B, the head of the bolt being countersunk in the lateral face of the draw-iron; A nut, e, is fitted on the outer end of said bolt to bear against the removable draw-iron and clamp the same in place. i
A thill-iron, F, of the ordinary class, is connected with the draw-irons C D by a draw bolt or pin, G, which is made of two members or parts, g g', that are integral with the drawirons C D, respectively. The member g of the draw-bolt is similar to a stud on the opposing face of the iixed draw-iron C while the inember g of the detachable draw-iron D is much longer7 so as to pass nearly through the eye of the thill-iron and meet or abut against the short member g'of the draw-bolt.
A pliable or elastic washer, H, is fitted on the draw-bolt between the opposing faces of one of the draw-irons and the thill-iron.
The front face of the horizontal plate B, adjoining the rounded eye of the thill-iron, is made concave, as at j, to enable the eye of said thill-iron to fit closely thereto and turn on the draw-bolt with ease.
This being the construction of my' improved thill-coupling, the operation thereof is as fol* lows: To connect a thill to the coupling, the bolt E or the nut e thereof is removed and the draw-iron D detached. The thill-iron is now adjustable alongside of the fixed drawiron C, so that the member g of the draw-bolt enters the eye of the thill-iron, and the removable drawiron D is again adjusted against the plate B and the thill-iron, so that the threaded pin or bolt E passes through one end of said draw-iron and the member g of the draw-bolt at the outer end of said draw-iron D enters the eye of the thill-iron. The removable draw-iron is thus held iuplace, as well as the thill-iron, while the nut e or the bolt is being tightened, thus relieving the operator of the labor of, holding the several parts in place. The detachable draw-iron is very securely and firmly held in place bythe member g entering the eye of the thill-iron and ICO the nut c or bolt E binding against the rear end of the same, thus preventing accidental separation of the parts and avoiding the use of rubber packings or anti-rattlers, commonly resorted to in this class of devices for securing tight joints and overcoming' the objectionable rattling noise.
It will be noted that my improved thillcoupling obviates the use of bolts, which are liable to become loose, and that no projecting parts are provided on which mud, ttc., can lodge and interfere with the easy adjustment and manipulation of the same; and it will be further observed that the coupling can be easily and quickly operated with very little effort, and that it is extremely simple and durable in construction and cheap of manufacture.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent7 isl. In a thill-coupling, the combination of a fixed horizontal plate having at one end an integral draw-iron, a detachable drawiron etage@ iitted against the free end of said plate and having an aperture through which a bolt is adapted to pass when said draw-iron is adjusted against the plate, the bolt fixed to the rigid plate for clamping the detachable drawiron in place, and a sectional draw-bolt, the members of which are made integral with the rigid and detachable draw-irons and project toward one another from the opposing faces of said draw-irons, substantially as described. 2. A thill-coupling consisting of a clip, a rigid horizontal plate having an integral draw* iron at one end, a horizontal threaded pin or bolt fixed in the other end of said plate, a detachable draw-iron through which said pin or bolt passes, a thill-iron, and a sectional drawbolt having its members made integral with the draw-irons, substantially as described.
