UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEIVIS STEIN, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
STOCKlNG-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,011, dated December 25, 1888.
Application iiled May 8, 1838. Serial No. 273,237. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS STEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stocking-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to the clasp portion of stocking-supporters; and it consists in certain novel construction of such clasp from sheetmetal, as hereinafter described, for producing a simple and effective article at a low cost of manufacture. Q In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of a blank used in the construction of my clasp. Fig. 2 represents a similar view thereof applied to a leg-encircling band. Fig. represents a side view thereof detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A indicates a blank of sheet metal or other material of elongate shape formed integral with ears B at or near one end, and with two parallel slots, 0, and an eye, D, at or near the other end, the slots being adjacent to and inclined toward one side of the blank, while the eye is adjacent to the other side thereof. Said ears B are bent at right angles to the face of the blank A, and constitute the bearings for apivot, (2, supporting the ordinary spring-j aw, F, serving to com plete the clasp, the outer end of said jaw, as well as the corresponding end of the blank, being usually serrated. The parallel slots 0 are of equal length, and through them is drawn one end of a leg-encircling band, G, insuch a manner that the latter is firmly united to the clasp by the bar of metal left between the slots, the other end of said band carrying a hook, I, to be inserted in the eye D when the band is adjusted on the leg. The eifect of making the slots 0 inclined is to permit the band to take an inclined position 011 the leg, as that shown in Fig. 2, but the inclination of said slots is not a necessary feature of my invention. In some cases one of the slots 0 may be omitted,or some other suitable bandattaching medium may be substituted for the slots, and the blank may also be provided with struck-up barbs or prongs to assist in holding the band.
It will be seen that my construction of the clasp involves the least amount of labor, inasmuch as the blank A may be formed in one operation, and hence it has the advantage of simplicity and cheapness, while it is very effective in use by affording a rigid support.
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The blank for clasps herein described, consisting of a sheet-metal blank, A, which is formed integral with ears B at one end, and with parallel slots 0' and an eye, D, at the othe end, said slots for uniting one portion of a leg-encircling band, G, to the blank A, and the eye another portion thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
LEWIS STEIN.
