My invention relates to improvements in air-escape valves t'or steam-heating radiators.
The object of myinvention is to provide an automatic valve which will permit the escape ot' air from a radiator when the steam is turned on, but will automatically close as either steam or waiter enters it, thus prevent ing the escape otl both steam and water.
The construction ot' my invention is eX- plained by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure l represents a lmlgitiulinal vertical section through the val ve-case and a l'ront view of the valvc-supporting bracket. liig. 2 represents a side view, part in section.

A is the valve-case, which is attached by the screw-threaded sleeve ll to the upper part. ot' a radiator. The case A is provided with an elongated neck, (i. The neck is secured to the case A by a screw-threaded Hange, fl). The upper end ot the neck is provided with two valve-scats,`l 1 and ll. The valve-seat E is closed by the valve G, which is formed on the upper end ot the valve-rod ll. The lower end otl the valve-rml ll is a llixed to a iioat, l, which is adapted to inove a slight distance upward and downward in the chamber .l ot' the case A. 'lhus as wateraccumulates in the radiator lrom the condensation ot' steam therein it buoys up the tloat` l, thereby closing the valve G and preventing the escape ot' water t'rom the chamber J, as it would otherwise do. The valve-seat F is adapted to be closed soon at'ter the admission ot' steam into the radiator by the expansion ot" the caso A and neck (l, by which expansion the valve-scat l? vis brought in contact with the adjustable valve K. The valve K is ailjustably supported above and partiallyv within the valve-seat F trom and by the val ve-supporli n g bracket L. The bracket L is made semi-cylimlrical in shape, and is larger at its lower end to con t'orm to the shape ol' a tloatchamber, J, and is contracted at its upper end to conform to the shape ot' the contracted neck (l ot' the valve-chamber, and is provided with numerous apertures, S, which permitof the circulation ot' airthrough it, and the same is preferably made ot' iron or other vmetal ot' less expansibility than the valve-case A, while the valve-case A is preferably made ot brass or other metal ot' greater expansibility than the bracket,whereby by the excess ot' expansion and contraction of the valve-case over that ot' the supporting -bracket said valve-seat F is opened and closed. The valve K is adjusted higher or lower in the forwardprojectin tlange d of the bracket L, accord ing tothe length ot' contraction and expansion ot' the Avalve-case, by turning the hand-screw M.
Thus it is obvious that when the steam is turned o'tt the valve-case A will, as it becomes cool, contract, thus causing the valve-seat F to be drawn awayjtrom the valve K, whereby the valve is opened and air is permitted to enter the radiator thrtnig'h the valve-case A and steam-passage N, whenby the cooling and condensation ot' the steam water accumulates in the radiator. \\'hen steam is again turned on, the water in the radiator, which might thereby be t'orced through the valvecase and from thence into the room, is arrested in its upward movement through the case by the float l, which lioat is raised by the buoyancy otl the water as it enters the chamber J, thereby raising the valve G and closing the valve-scatE, thus preventing the possibility ol.' the water escaping be't'orc the case A has been heated bythe intlux ol. steam, and consequently bet'ore the valve F has been closed by the expansion ot' the case A. \Vhcn,how ever, the steam has entered sul'lieiently to displace the water in the chamber .l and to expand the case A, the valve F will close, thus preventing the escape of steam al'terthe tloat l has dropped back to the bottom oll the chamber J. lhus it will be seen that by the use of the .float and expansible val ve-chalnber I am enabled to permit the free escape ot' air without permitiingthe escape ol either steam or water.
