Description
Patented Dec. 11; 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO D. CARL, OF LAKE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO IIIRAM C. HI MBERT, OF SAME PLACE.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,533, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed September 5, 1888. Serial No. 284,670. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LORENZO D. CARL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake P. 0., in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the coupling, showing it properly attached and the screwhead slightly elevated. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the socket and clip. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the retaining-block. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the elastic block or backing.
The present invention has relation to thillcouplings; and itsnature consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawmgs.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the socket, which is substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and is provided with the clip a, which is preferably formed integral therewith, and is attached to the vehicle-axle in the ordinary manner. The socket A is provided with the recesses 19, which are for the purpose of securing and holding the bar B, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The bars B are formed of such a length that they will fit the socket A.
The retaining-block C is substantially of the form shown, and is so adjusted that it will fit the socket A, as shown in the drawings. This retaining-block O is provided with the recess 0, which is for the purpose of receiving and holding the elastic block d, which is so adjusted that it will press or bear against the bar B, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The retainingblock is provided with the shoulder d, which is for the purpose of compressing the elastic block (I, and at the same time preventing the bottom or lower end of the retaining-block from striking the bottom of the socket A, for the purpose hereinafter described. The screw D is located substantially as shown in the drawings, and is provided with the head 6, which is for the purpose of adjusting said screw. For the purpose of providing a screwthreaded aperture having sufficient thickness, the extension f is provided. In use the bar B is placed in the socket A, as shown in Fig. 2, and the retainingblock, together with the elastic block, placed in proper position, and the screw D adjusted so as to securely hold the thill E in the socket A. It will be seen that by my peculiar arrangement, as the elastic block becomes worn from use, the screw D can be tightened, thereby tightening the clastic block against the bar B, thus preventing any rattling.
I am aware that clamping-screws have heretofore been used to hold thill-coupling blocks in proper position, and hence do not claim that feature, broadly.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I The combination of the socket A, provided with the recesses b and the clip a, the bar B, the retaining-block 0, provided with the recess c and the shoulder d, the elastic block d, and the screw D, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed myname, in the presence of two witnesses, this 31st day of August, 1888.
LORENZO D. CARL.
